Smallpox in the Country.

Reliable information comes to town today that Thos. Denny and three of his daughters living near Reeds now have smallpox. This is the family in which the youngest daughter was reported sick a week ago with this disease.

Grant Dotson, teacher at the Gem school southeast of here reports that the Gem school and three others in his vicinity are closed on account of a case of smallpox across the line in Newton county.

ELECTION RESULTS.

Republican candidate John Bartosh received over 20,000 votes to win the title of Presiding Commissioner of Jasper County in yesterday’s election. Write in candidate and former Commissioner Danny Hensley gathered considerable votes but failed to muster the support to return to the office. Write in candidate Butch Rowland garnered an undetermined number of votes due to delays in counting of the write-in ballots as of press time. An unexpected high turn-out also contributed to the delay in counting votes.

Unopposed candidate for Circuit 29 Judge David Mouton registered the largest number of votes in the county with 25,969.

Bartosh, who had the endorsement of Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn, relied heavily on his Republican nomination in August as a dominating force in his campaign.

Hensley campaigned heavily in the county and spent most of his capital educating the public how to vote for a write-in candidate. According to recent reports Hensley out-spent Bartosh nearly four to one in the general election.

Mornin',

It’s 12:30 A.M. on Wednesday mornin’ and the votes are still bein’ counted. I was hopin’ this would be settled by now and we could give ya the final tallies on the Jasper County races.

The large turn-out for the election caused some precincts to run out of ballots and photo-copies had to be used. Those ballots had ta be counted by hand and that further delayed the total results.

I heard that Newton County had over 50% turnout for the election and some were estimatin’ that Jasper County could even be higher.

There was also a search for a Democrat to help with the countin’ late in the evenin’ at the courthouse. None to be found on the Square that time of night.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• "A friend of mine went away for a month and forgot about a package of ground beef in the fridge. When he got home, the smell was hideous. We tried bleach ... baking soda ... ammonia ... not to mention how many other chemicals and fruits we used. The smell was imbedded. A buddy told me to use newspaper. He said to take eight or more sheets of newspaper and lay a few on each shelf. To my surprise, the next day the odor was gone. It has worked for lunchboxes and coolers, too!" -- T.D. in Pennsylvania

• Common substitution: You can use a tablespoon of lemon juice mixed with enough milk to make one cup for every cup of buttermilk a recipe requires. Let the mixture stand five minutes before use.

• "If you are going on vacation, leave a plastic baggie filled with ice cubes in your freezer. If, when you return, the baggie is filled with a single chunk of ice, you will know that your power has been interrupted long enough to spoil your food while you were away." -- G.L. in Missouri

• Wooden spoons can be handy for more than just stirring. Use a long-handled wooden spoon placed horizontally over the rim of a boiling pot. It will keep the liquid from boiling over.

• "Store your nail polish in the refrigerator to keep it fresh longer -- just like food!" -- A.C. in Washington

• "I always use club soda when making pancakes. Just use the same amount of soda as you would water. The bubbles make the batter fluffier, and the pancakes turn out much lighter. They’re delicious!" -- M.O. in New Jersey
