Some endeavors are doomed to
failure, like trying to jump across a well in two
jumps.
Wise admonitions:
Never eat in a restaurant where
antacid is listed on the menu as a side dish.
Never entrust your life to a
surgeon with more than three bandaids on his
fingers.
Never get in line at the bank
behind a person wearing a skimask.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
I figured out a while
back that one stupid thing I could avoid is
tellin’ folks about stupid things I’ve
done.
I keep thinkin’ I was just
too young to understand stupid, or at least I
would eventually outgrow the urge to do stupid
things.
Typically when I start
feelin’ I’ve past the stupid things
portion of my life, I have ta be reminded that
you’re never too old to do somethin’
stupid.
I have had a life long battle
with various forms of the nail. Those little
metal spikes make me do a variety of stupid
things. The most common result is me tryin’
to hold a nail with a thumb that has just been
smacked with my hammer. I just never learn.
This is some fact, but mostly,
Just Jake Talkin’.

Your Good Health
By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Rheumatoid
Arthritis Affects Mostly Women
DEAR DR. DONOHUE:
My mother was affected with rheumatoid arthritis
at 27. She had me at the age of 32. Could I get
it since she had it for almost five years before
she had me? Is it hereditary, or does it affect
people randomly? -- C.F.
ANSWER: Women with
rheumatoid arthritis outnumber men with it by a
ratio of 3-to-1. Being a woman, therefore, puts
one at greater risk for it.
There is a
hereditary component to this illness. If one
identical twin has it, the chances of the other
identical twin having it are 30 percent to 50
percent. Identical twins have the exact same
genes. Children of an affected mother or father
are twice as likely to have it than those without
such a family history.
Genes aren’t
its only cause. Environmental factors are
involved too. Your mother having been sick with
rheumatoid arthritis when she had you is no more
of a risk for your getting it than if she had
come down with it long after your birth.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE:
Can a person with Lyme disease spread it to
another? Our son-in-law has it, and we wonder if
our daughter will get it from him. -- P.D.
ANSWER: Lyme
disease is not spread from person to person.
It’s spread from a bite of an infected tick.
Your daughter won’t catch it from her
husband.
