INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Met At Sloan Cottage.
The Athenaeum C.L.S.C.
held its annual party last night at the home of Mrs.
Terra Sloan at Morgan switch, on the electric. Each
member of the society invited two guests and thirty or
forty persons were present.
There were many pleasant
pastimes one of which was a spelling match, the one
ending a word with his letter to take the dunce stool.
The guests also drew for slips, and thus selected
partners; the two slips together forming the name of an
animal, which the couple had to draw a picture of. Thus a
prize bouquet went to Mrs. R. Taaffe and a little boy
present for their masterpiece, a "Gibson"
giraffe. Some fine refreshments were served and the town
guests got home of the 12 oclock car.
M. Whitchurch, the Webb
City miner charged with making false affidavit to secure
money, was dismissed today because nobody appeared
against him in Justice Bartons court.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
Fall is typically when the "pile shift"
takes place at my house. Movin the winter
piles out and movin in the summer piles.
This spring and fall ritual is always intended to
be a cullin process. The struggle of
gettin rid of those things ya really never
use, just hate ta throw em away. My problem is it seems the piles never
diminish much over the years. No matter how much
I throw away each season, somehow I accumulate
replacements each year. I keep thinkin
someday Ill open the barn door and see the
entire floor with everthing that is
occupyin space in its proper and useful
place. Although its hard to judge with any
accuracy, I do think there are fewer and smaller
piles than before. Hopefully this fall I can
muster the courage to uncover a few more square
feet of floor space.
This is some fact, but mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

By Mari An WillisNow lets see...yep, we need rain
and it is time for the Maple Leaf Parade!!! It
seems that is part of the charm associated with
parades...the snuggling to stay dry and warm. A
real affirmation that fall has arrived. Carthage
sure knows how to throw a fun parade and
festival.
This is also squash and pumpkin
time of the year. Both of these vegetables are
high in Vit. A & C and fiber. Apples, well
you cant say enough for apples. Over the
years many people with gastric disorders have
discovered that slippery elm bark powder mixed
with applesauce can ease digestive and
eliminative problems. Dr. Christopher used it in
many of his formulas for nourishing the sick and
soothing mucous membranes. When my kids were
young we ran across a recipe that used it with
juice to make a jelled consistency which we
substituted for "gummy worms."
The old time remedy derived
from the Arnica flower has been used for sore
muscles and bumps and bruises for decades. There
are always plenty of those after a parade. My
friend even uses it on her horses. Arnica cream
was one of the mainstays in my medicine chest
when the twins were young and learning to walk.
My Mother took a bad fall at the age of 72 and
was able to stop most bruising and soreness when
she applied the arnica gel. One would not use
arnica on an open wound.
Have fun, be safe and enjoy the
Maple Leaf Festivities.

Art Notes from Hyde House
By Sally Armstrong, Director of artCentral
HAPPY MAPLE LEAF WEEK! We at
the Hyde House are preparing for visitors that we
HOPE to have this Saturday and Sunday during the
Maple Leaf festivities. We will be open both days
during our regular hours even though we have not
been in any of the Maple Leaf advertising or
printed brochures (sadly!). Never the less, our
wonderful show of Betsy Paulys watercolors
remains up and we look forward to showing off
this weekend, so PLEASE come by with your Maple
Leaf visitors and make us a part of one of your
days this weekend. Some still are not sure where
we are go to the Carthage football field
(where the Band Competition will be going on
loudly!) and the street running along the north
side is 13th. If you go across River Street
heading east, we are just at the top of the rise
on the right next to Fairview Greenhouse. Come
see us on you way to or from the Band
Competition!
My wonderful student-intern
Alyson will be greeting visitors and light
refreshments will be served. So if the men head
to the car show, ladies come see us and
then everybody meet over at the stadium to hear
the wonderful bands. Sounds like a plan to me!
Our show has been so well received, many prints
continue to sell well, and we thank those patrons
and friends of artCentral who have made this show
such a success.
Our Board of Directors met this
past week as we welcomed Helen Kunze back to
active service to artCentral as the newest member
of our board. Helen is a fine commercial artist
who is currently raising a young family, but who
was formerly an assistant volunteer director of
artCentral in the early years. We thank her for
her willingness to serve again, as plans are
cranking up for a very exciting project underway
that we will be announcing soon, as soon as the
board gets the details worked out.
If you havent been
through the intersection of Centennial and Grand
lately, go by. There is the cutest, most original
scarecrow vignette I think I have ever seen in
Sandy Higgins yard on the east corner. A
scarecrow artist is perched on a hay bale
painting an oil painting of his scarecrow subject
seated across amidst mums and pumpkins.
Sandys next-door neighbor has a cute one
too, and she is the "creator" of both,
so go by and make them a "Kodac
moment". Nice to see art portrayed in this
way as a fall motif so unique.
See you at the Hyde House and
have a great weekend in beautiful Carthage! AND
COME SEE US!
