today's laugh

A kleptomaniac once went to a cure to confess his sins, and while he was enumerating them, he managed to steal the priest's watch. Continuing with his confession, he said:

"Father, besides all that, I stole someone's watch and the crime weighs very heavily on my conscience. I don't want to keep this watch any longer and I beg you to take it to put an end to my remorse."

"But I don't accept any stolen objects," replied the good man. "Just return it to the rightful owner."

"I have already tried but he won't accept it," replied the culprit.

"Did you ask him?"

"Yes, father."

"Well," said the cure, "if he really doesn't want to take back his watch you can keep it quietly without any remorse."

REVIVAL WORK IN THE BIG TENT.

Rev. C.B. Boving of Lamar Preached Last Night - Genreal Plans.

Rev. C.B. Boving, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Lamar, took Rev. J.B. Culpper's place at the revival tent last night and preached an able and attractive servon on "The Gospel." He is spoken of by Rev. Mr. Culpepper as a promising young man in the ministry.

Two thousand people were present last night. Several conversions were made.

Speaking of the date of his departure this morning, Rev. Culpepper said that since the rains are destroying the intensity and continuity of the work, the meetings will be longer drawn out, since he will not be content to quit the field until satisfactory results are brought about. The men's meeting will be held Thursday at the tent, but a meeting for women only will be held at the Methodist Church on Main Street.

  Today's Feature

Solid Waste and Sidewalks Tonight.

The Public Works Committee will meet this evening at 5:15 in Council Chambers due to a postponed meeting from last week. The agenda includes discussion of the solid waste contract that was turned back to the Committee after being defeated at the last regular Council meeting. Also on the agenda for discussion are sidewalks, the curb and gutter project proposed for Hazel Avenue, and the drainage on Buena Vista Avenue.

The solid waste contract discussion may or may not be substantiative because the Council agenda for Tuesday's regular meeting includes a "possible reconsideration of ordinance authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with American Disposal." It is still not certain that there will be the necessary seven votes required to reconsider the issue. The ordinance was defeated by only four negative votes due to the absence of member Jackie Boyer who was out of town. Six votes are needed to pass an ordinance, and with Boyer's absence there were only five affirmative votes. Council member Don Stearnes, who was one of the four against, has stated he will vote for the contract if it is reconsidered.

Mornin',

The sidewalk mall on the South side of the Square was officially opened last Wednesday. Those of us workin' in the area have been sneakin' through for the last couple a weeks as finish work was bein' completed. Besides bein' handy, the $70,000 project has improved the look of the Square considerable. Those chain link barricades were beginin' to look like an exercise area for convicts.

The City is now gettin' ready to start improvin' other sidewalks on City owned property. The plan includes a portion of the City Parks and is estimated to cost somewhere around $50,000 at this point.

Public Works Committee Chair Bill Fortune has also committed to gettin' started on research to figure out how to begin gettin' the rest of the sidewalks around the community up to snuff. That's a big project and will take some time no doubt, and some money.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Dear Al & Kelly: Since my workshop is large, I need to use extension cords quite a bit. I try to keep them off of the floor so they don't get damaged and I don't trip over them. I just use clothespins to clip them to my workbench, garage-door track, a shelf, trash can or whatever is next to where I am working. It's much safer and my cords last longer. - B.D.

A Super Hint - If you are going to paint your outdoor steps, add some sand to the paint. It will help cut down on slippery surfaces.

Dear Al: I bought a new wooden screen door and painted it to match the trim on our home. I came up with a super way to paint the wire screen to match. I used a regular kitchen sponge to apply the paint. It didn't clog up the screen holes or waste the paint. I know you don't have to paint the screening, but it looks so much nicer, I think. W.D.

Q: I have an outside faucet in my back yard that is always dripping water. I tried to tighten down the screw on the top of the handle and found that it was rusted in place and wouldn't budge. What will work to free it up? L.K.

A: Try a rust remover or penetrating oil first. Put some around the screw on the top and give it plenty of time to work. If it doesn't work, you can drill out the rusted screw. .or replace the entire faucet. They don't cost very much!
