Guest-"Look here! How long must I wait for the half-portion of duck I ordered?"

Waiter-"Till somebody orders the other half. We can't go out and kill half a duck."

First Burglar-"I need eyeglasses."

Second Burglar-"What makes you think so?"

First Burglar-"Well, I was twirling the knobs of a safe and a dance-orchestra began to play."

Grade one was having a lesson on birds. After some discussion the fact was established that birds eat fruit.

One little girl, however, was unconvinced.

"But, teacher," she asked, raising her hand," how can the birds open the cans?"

Prof.-"Name two pronouns."

Stude-"Who, me?"

Scalded at the Quarry.

G.W. Bennett, a quarryman for the Center Creek Stone, Co., was severely scalded with hot steam while at work in the quarry Monday. He was working with a portable steam drill and was handling the rubber steam pipe when the wire wrapping caught in his shirt and caused the hose to break. His left shoulder and arm received the full force of the scalding steam. Bennett came to town on the electric car and had his injuries dressed by Dr. Post. He is now recovering nicely.

A New Jack Record.

The South Carthage Mining plant yesterday broke all its old records and established a new one. Just 15,000 pounds of jack were cleaned up yesterday and the best ton was made in 50 minutes. That was from 2 o'clock to 2:50 p.m. This is said to beat the ton record of any other plant in the Carthage district by ten minutes.

City Owned Sidewalk Repair Closer.

Engineering Department Head Joe Butler reported to the Public Works Committee last Monday that specifications for sidewalk repair and replacement on City property are being drawn up and he hopes to bid the work sometime in September. He said he would like to see the work completed before winter sets in.

"We would like the Committee to start thinking about some of these problems that are going to be facing the City with sidewalks (on other than City owned property), said Butler. "There are some of the problems that have not been addressed by the Council or this Committee formerly. There are trees in the right of way, trees in the curbs, trees in the sidewalks, brick sidewalks, and historic sidewalks. The question of who's going to pay for it. If it is to be the property owner, is the City going to do it and make the property owner pay for it outright?"

"There are several changes to the ordinance that we would like to recommend to you. If you leave the concept as it currently stands (property owners are responsible for sidewalk maintenance and repair) we would also recommend some changes."

Mornin',

There was discussion about getting curb and guttering along a portion of Hazel durin' the Public Works meetin' last Monday. A program was mentioned that would allow the property owners to get curb and gutters and then pay for it over a five year period on their annual tax bill. They figured a typical residential property with a hunderd foot or so of frontage would cost about a thousand to twelve hunderd bucks. This is also about what is estimated ta cost for a sidewalk for the same footage. The odd thing is there is no such program on the books for puttin' together a block of folks who would like to get sidewalks either constructed or repaired. The other irony of course, is that the land owner isn't responsible for maintainin' a curb once it's installed, even though they've paid for it. Any help financin' sidewalks could help those citizens with the will to improve the neighborhood.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Intro to the Internet

There are a lot of great reasons to use the Internet. Here’s a couple of reasons why most people spend time on-line.

* Electronic Mail- Ask anyone who uses it and they’ll tell you life wouldn’t be the same without it . Electronic Mail ( or E/Mail) is a great way of communicating on the Internet. Not only can you send and receive letters but you can also attach documents ( files, ect.) to your messages.

* Research - The Internet holds an enormous amount of information from all corners of the earth. You can access on-line Encyclopedias, Libraries, Ect. to gain information on almost any topic you might be looking for. Once you find that information, you can print it (as well as any pictures you might see) or save it to a disk.

* Business - Look up telephone numbers in an interactive phone book, access competitor sites, track UPS of Fedex packages, plan a business trip, or simply order a pizza on-line. The list of things that could help you at work is endless!

* Advertising - for a small fee you can put your own company on-line! Advertise your product where up to 50 million people could have access to it.

* Internet communications - Create a secure (employee only) Internet site where you could store data and information useful to your employees.
