Frank Griffith who lives 2 miles north of Carthage left at the newspaper office today specimens of oil rock found on his fathers place. It is limestone but is thoroughly saturated with oil and has an oily smell. It was found at a depth of 16 feet and the water in the well was for a time so oily that the stock refused to drink it. Not far from the Griffith place sandstone crops out of the ground and it may be that there is an oil field much nearer Carthage than the Alba neighborhood.
