today's
laugh
Sue: My uncle cant decide whether
to get a new cow or a bicycle for his farm.
John: Hed certainly look silly
riding around on a cow.
Sue: Yes, but he would look a lot
sillier milking a bicycle.
What do you get when you cross poison
ivy and a four-leaf clover?
A rash of good luck.
What happened in the race between the
pen, knife, and telephone?
The pen started skipping, knife just
couldnt cut it, and telephone got hung up somewhere
along the line.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue. "Hanna Did it Again" Cigars.
Capt. T. B. Tuttle was regaling his
Republican friends with a choice brand of cigars today at
the expense of M. Meehan. The box the captain carried
bore inside and out the inscription "Hanna Did it
Again" and that, he explained, was the brand of the
cigars. Several days ago while the Ohio senatorial
contest was at its height Mr. Meehan bantered Capt.
Tuttle about Hannas defeat, which he said, was
certain. A wager of a box of cigars on the result was
laid and taken. Meehan is said to have invited a number
of friends to be at his office the day after the final
vote and assist him in smoking Tuttles cigars, but
the tables are turned and Republicans are enjoying cigars
at Meehans expense. Meanwhile Capt. Tuttle smiles.
A. Axel, of the New Bee Hive, looked
smiling and happy this morning, all because of the
arrival of a fine baby boy at his home Sunday.

Airport Relocation Dominates
Agenda.
The
Council approval of the Mayors
appointees to the Myers Airport Search
Committee is the only item shown on the
agenda under old business for tomorrow
nights regular meeting. The
Councils vote on the matter was
postponed during the last regular
meeting.
The delay
did not change the Mayors
recommendation for the committee which
includes City Administrator Tom Short,
Economic Development Director Max
McKnight, Bill Johnson, Art Dunaway, Eric
Ferrell, Ray Grace, and John Cuaderes.
Committee members will be appointed for
five year terms.
The
Council has already approved the
formation of the committee which is
charged with the purpose of pursuing
grant funding for the relocation of the
City airport. A total of $300,000 was
earmarked in the general fund to be used
as matching funds for such a grant.
The
approval of the Committee included a five
year time frame to accomplish its task.
State statutes require, however, that the
$300,000 set aside be reapproved by the
Council each year.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',
The long standin
debate on the role of City Administrator in
the City of Carthage seems to have solidified
to some extent. Although the now sometimes
heard proclamation that the City is ready for
a City Manager form of government has not yet
gathered a full head of steam, the Charter
does allow for a broad interpretation of the
authority that can be given to the City
Administrator.
There is without doubt a
sense that more should be expected of the
Administrator than the task of applying for
an occasional grant or the supervisin
of the day-to-day operation of Memorial Hall.
It appears that the
confidence of the Mayor, Council and City
Staff is lining up behind the new City
Administrator. At this point it may be little
more than attempting to let staff do their
job in a professional manner.
Whatever the outcome, this
does mark a fundamental change in the way the
City does business.
This is some fact, but
mostly, Just Jake Talkin.

Weekly Column The Super Handyman
Dear Kelly: I love my
rock fireplace, but the stones were starting to
look dull, so I decided to try to enhance the
color and clean them up. I mixed two parts of
boiled linseed oil with one part turpentine. Then
I put the container with the mixture into a large
pan of hot water to warm it up a bit. I wiped the
mixture on the stones with a rag and then wiped
off the excess. Its been a couple of months
now, and friends are still remarking how great it
looks. - S. A.
As turpentine and boiled
linseed oil are flammable, keep them away from
flames. Use rubber gloves, and allow for plenty
of ventilation. Also, to be on the safe side,
rinse the stones after youve cleaned them,
and then wait a day or so before using the
fireplace.
Dear Al: Sometimes when
I try to use my old masking tape, it is too dry
and sticks to itself and makes a real mess. I
have found that you can revive a roll of tape in
a microwave. A few seconds on high, and your tape
will act like new again. It also works on
electrical tape and the white tape used for
bandaging. - P. A.
Just make sure the tape
dispenser isnt made of metal.
Dear Al & Kelly:
Sometimes when I am drilling or cutting a hole in
a narrow board, I find that the wood splits. I
have tried, and proved that you can put clamps
around the narrow board to hold the sides
together when you cut, and that way the wood is
much less likely to split. - C. P.
