A London doctor touring in the prvinces had difficulty in obtaining suitable lodgings in a small town.

One lady, showing him a dingy bedroom, remarked persuasively, "As a whole, this is quite a nice room, isn’t it?"

"Yes, madam," he agreed, "but as a bedroom it’s no good."

The vicar, awarding prizes at the local dog show, was scandalized at the costumes worn by some members of the younger fair sex.

"Look at that youngster," said he; "the one with cropped hair, the cigareete and breeches, holding two pups. Is it a boy or a girl?"

"A girl," said his companion. "She’s my daughter."

"My dear sir!" The vicar was flustered. "Do forgive me. I would never have been so outspoken had I known you were her father."

"I’m not," said the other, "I’m her mother."

Captain Whitsett Arrives

Also Sergt. Elliot and two Others- Recruiting at Once

Captain George P. Whitsett, of Company C, Fifth Missouri Infantry, arrived in Carthage this morning from Chickamauga, accompanied by Sergt. Robert Elliot, of Carthage and Sergt. R.A. Moore and Corporal O.E. Mertz of Kansas City. Sergeant Deacon left Chickamauga with Capt. Whitsett but dropped off at his home in Harrisonville.

Moore and Mertz were about the streets all day, while Sergt. Elliot went at once to his home on Fulton street. Before Capt. Whitsett could get off the square he was besieged by crowds of friends and acquaintances. Many fathers and brothers eagerly grasped the captain's hand and asked for news of the boys in camp. Judge Brown and J.M. Whitsett got out a lot of flags and decorated the office windows of the former in the First National bank building in honor of their arrival.

Captain Whitsett looks thin and brown, but healthy and every inch a soldier. A short black mustache has adorned his lip since his departure from Carthage. He said: "I am in charge of the recruiting for the second battalion of the Fifth, with three sergeants and three corporals to assist. We will have 113 men to raise for the battalion and may raise as many of them as we like or can right here in Carthage, but we may go elsewhere to raise the greater part of them."

The work of recruiting will begin at once, probably tomorrow morning. The recently organized reserve companies will be investigated and given a chance to go. Among these is J.J. Nelson's at Webb City and Norton, Tindale and Purcell's company.

Americans Not Allowed Ashore

In a recent very interesting letter home, Miss Bessie Rose, now traveling abroad, states that about April 1 their party of eighteen, mostly Americans, was not allowed to go ashore in Suda Bay on the island of Crete.

The reasons were purely political and for six hours while the boat was unloading freight no one was allowed to go ashore.

The bay was at the time full of warships from various nations. The party was composed of members of the "American school of classical studies" of which she is a member. She is now in Sicily and their next point will be Pompeii and Naples, thence back to Rome.

Fireworks at Muni Park.

Preparations for the annual City fireworks display at Municipal Park are on schedule according to Parks Superintendent Alan Bull. Parks personnel spent a good portion of yesterday mowing and getting the area ready for the expected crowd on Saturday night.

The City spends approximately $10,000 on the celebration and it will be the only local July Fourth fireworks display this year. Precious Moments, which has also had displays in the past, has opted to not put on a fireworks display this summer.

Bull says that the Municipal Golf Course will be accepting tee times until noon on Saturday and allowing golfers to begin play for nine holes up until two o’clock.

A first aid station will be set up for the event and the area will be policed to keep illegal fireworks from being set off.

The City Council voted to keep the celebration at Municipal Park and denied a request by the Parks Board to move the display to the Myers Park property. Past attempts make the event more "regional" were not well received by the Council.

Numbers In the Art Garden.

release artCentral

Great news, the Art in the Garden tour numbers have been crunched and it looks like everyone was a winner. We are so pleased to tell you that two-hundred and ten dollars was donated to artCentral's art library. Thanks a million to everyone who took the tour and donated. Also a big thank you to Jane and Carla for all their hard work. Thanks to Jane and the Art Forum for arranging artCentral to be on the tour and on the receiving end.

The Art Forum is really a great bunch of people. They are so supportive of artCentral, we can't thank them enough or say enough good things about them.

As far as numbers went for this tour, Joplin's library came out on top with donations totaling nine-hundred and eighty five dollars, Phelp's House was next with four-hundred dollars, Webb City's library received two-hundred and ninety dollars and write-ins of the Lamar library fifteen dollars, Pittsburg library five dollars, and Imagine Art Gallery five dollars. Way to spread it around! Isn't it great what we can accomplish when we all work together.

We are planning to use the funds we received to add another art video to our video section and fill in some gaps in our book selection. We are a little thin in some areas, such as sculpture and pottery.

Helen is working on this years membership drive. She has revamped our membership forms ( with some more of her cool artwork and they are back from the printer. If you would like to receive one just give us a call, or drop us a line and we'll get you signed up. A big thanks to Helen for her hard work. Under her guidance our numbers have grown to 107 members.

Our luncheon tickets are on sale now. You can get them on the Carthage square at Imagine Art Gallery or at artCentral. We hope this event will be a good time for everyone. If so we will do it again. Thanks to those who have already purchased tickets. The cost is $15 (it's a fund-raiser) and Andy Thomas will be the program. The epicurean meal will be prepared by Shellie Markham. Guess that leaves Helen and Robin as the ones serving the meal. This could really be interesting.

We have some artCentral information sheets available here along with our membership forms. There is the little brochure complete with photos of our lovely little gallery, Helen will soon have some copies of our latest newsletter and the Planning Committee has a schedule of events now through the end of the year. We even have a how booked for 1999.

VantAge Point to Hold Free Diabetes Seminar.

News Release The VantAge Point

More than 16 million Americans have diabetes and every minute another person is diagnosed with the disease. In 1996, over 162,000 Americans died from this disease. It is the fourth-leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. Diabetes costs our nation $138 billion a year.

Because this is such a widespread disease affecting people who either have diabetes themselves or have a family member or friend with diabetes, the VantAge Point's July 10 Friday Fair will be of special interest.

Yvonne Thomas, diabetes nurse specialist, will present an information seminar covering many aspects of the subject. Ms. Thomas is well known and highly respected in the southwest Missouri for her knowledge and expertise in effectively communicating her message. The VantAge Point is pleased to be able to offer to the people of this area the opportunity to attend her seminar. Friday Fair at the VantAge Point will begin at 10:00 am with an open house. The seminar begins at 10:30 am.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

Used ta have a dog that would start shakin' all over and hide behind the couch whenever it started to thunder. No talkin' to that dog. Just wouldn't listen.

No matter how calm we spoke, or how much we petted that dog, it wouldn't move from it's security furniture.

I don't suppose it really hurt anything that the dog was so fearful of a rumble or two. There was somethin' that made us kids want to get the dog to face the thunder.

'Course we were prob'ly lucky not to be struck down by lightnin' durin' some of our adventures durin' rain storms.

I suppose now there would be some dog shrink tellin' us that we could somehow work the animal through its fears and make it a more functional pet. The dog lived a normal and healthy life. Sometimes you just have to let shakin' dogs lay.

This is some fact, but mostly

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

Trust you will have a happy and safe 4th weekend. I am looking forward to a couple of days in a row of rest time. I want to putz around in my yard and cook for my kids and friends.

I was looking up something in THE VITIMAN BIBLE by Earl Mindell and got distracted and wound up reading many of the benefits of vitamin B6. According to the text, if one is deficient in this nutrient, some of the following symptoms may occur: weakness, irritability, nervousness, insomnia, anemia, a decrease in antibody formation and possible kidney, liver and skin conditions.

Some of the latest research indicates that a B6 deficiency may cause behavioral problems or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Many workers in this area take B6 as a preventative to carpal tunnel as their jobs require repetative motion with the same muscle. Peopl who use computers are beginning to complain of this syndrome and may be wise to add B6 to their nutritional programs.

Vitamin B6 also reduces and helps regulate fluid buildup, thereby reducing inflammation. I have found if I am retaining fluid so that my rings are tight or my shoes are much tighter by the end of the afternoon, if I increase my B6 swelling begins to go down. That is my personal experience and may not be yours, but it may be worth a try if you are aggrivated by swelling in the warm (HOT!) months. I have also found through experience that this vitamin may increase ones dreaming and make for a restless night. I take it around 3:00 and do not have to deal with overly vivid dreaming.

Do remember to wear your sunscreen and cover from the sun this weekend. Aloe Vera soothes a sunburn as does vinegar.
