Peter (saying his prayers) - "And please make John stop hurling rocks at me. By the way, I’ve mentioned this before."

A little girl of four came tearfully to her mother one morning with the complaint, "How can I button my dress when the buttons are in the back and I’m in the front?"

Willie - "Teacher says we’re here to help others."

Pa - "Of course we are."

Willie - "Well, what are the others here for?"

Boston Child - "Mamma! Mamma! The baby has fell out of the window!"

Boston Mother - "’Fallen,’ you mean. Quick! run for the doctor."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Has Embarked in Business.

T. C. Owens, the little violinist and peddler, who has been on our streets lately, has established himself in business and opened up a shop on Howard between Third and Fourth Streets. Owing to the fact that Mr. Owens is unfortunate in not being able to walk, he certainly deserves a share of the patronage in his line.

Lost Five Minutes of Recess.

The fire alarm from W. H. Miller's residence was sent in today during the morning recess at the Central and High school buildings. The boys on the school grounds all ran to the fire and the school bell was rung to bring them back. In order to get them back promptly the bell was tapped five minutes earlier than usual and so the lads lost five of their fifteen minutes' liberty by their wild scramble to see the fire.

School Board Issues Support Statement.

The Carthage R-9 School Board voted Monday night to go on record as supporting two Constitutional amendments that will be on the April 7 ballot.

"The Carthage R-9 School board of Education strongly urges voters to vote Yes on Constitutional Amendment No. 3 to place the financial responsibility of educating their own students on the Kansas City School District and to prevent drainage of state dollars through court ordered desegregation," said a news release yesterday.

Board member Craig Putnam told the Mornin’ Mail yesterday that constituents should carefully read the amendment and understand the impact it might have on the local school district.

"If three fails, the rest of the State will have to pay for it," said Putnam. "Kansas City ought to support their own district just like the rest of us have to."

The Board also strongly supports Amendment No. 4 which allows local districts to raise their bonding capacity from ten percent to fifteen percent.

The City Council and Mayor election will also be on April 7.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

I like the idea of usin’ the new water towers as billboards to promote the community. The idea of havin’ a maple leaf along side the City name sounds pretty classy. I’m sure there are other symbols that would attract attention.

They say the cost of maintainin’ such a "logo" on the tower wouldn’t amount ta much and the value of showin’ some community pride to the travelers on 71 Highway should offset any expense.

I’d have ta assume that there won’t be much controversy over such a plan once the design is decided upon. At this point the City staff is lookin’ at some ideas to bring to the Council for consideration. The towers prob’ly won’t be ready till the ‘99 tourist season, so there’s plenty of time ta get things in place.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.
