Did Ya Know. . .The City of Carthage will be spraying for mosquitoes this week, Monday thru Friday, May 18th thru 22nd. Your area will be sprayed in the evening of the day your trash is picked up, between the hours of 8 to 11 p.m. You might want to turn your attic or window fans off during that time.

Two Irishmen met once, and referred to the illness of a third.

"Poor Michael Hogan! Faith, I’m afraid he’s going to die," said one.

"And why would he die?" asked the other.

"Oh, he’s got so thin! You’re thin enough, and I’m thin--but, by my sowl, Michael Hogan is thinner than both of us put together."

The sun is all very well," said an Irishman, "but the moon is worth two of it; for the moon affords us light in the night-time, when we want it, whereas the sun’s with us in the day-time, when we have no occasion for it."

Said an Irish justice to a blustering prisoner on trial; "We want nothing from you, sir, but silence, and very little of that."

GEO. WHITSETT'S COMPANY.

George Whitsett's company, which is now awaiting orders to go to rendezvous with the Fifth Regiment of which it is to be a part, may leave for St. Louis Saturday evening, as the city papers say such is the expectation of the regiment, but the company has not received its marching orders.

The boys take their meals in true soldier fashion in a vacant building on East Fourth street. They sleep in the Kilgore building on Grant street. Sixty-four of them reposed there last night, and they were stowed in about as close as they could comfortably lie. Night before last they were inclined to be boisterous, but last night they were all tired and there were no disturbers.

Since the Light Guard has left, the company is drilling at the armory. The boys are learning rapidly and are anxious for the call to come for their regiment to go to St. Louis.

Park Board Comments.

Members of the Parks and Recreation Board, during a meeting last Wednesday, showed obvious signs of frustration about the Budget Committee’s cutting the Parks request from $112,000 to just over $58,000. The Committee also has allowed for an additional $36,725 to pay for maintenance of the Fair Acres Sports Complex.

"It’s nice for the Council to be tight," said member Clarence Kester, "but they should be thinking with their heads instead of what they sit on. I’ll put my baseball cap on the table right now if they want it."

Board Vice President Richard Campbell said he was frustrated, after spending a significant amount of time putting together a realistic budget, with the level of funding from the City.

"If they don’t like the way we’re doing it," said Campbell, "they need to find another way to do it."

In other action, the Board voted to send a recommendation to the City Council that the Fourth of July fireworks display be held at the Myers Park Development. Lost revenue from closing the golf course early and cleanup expense were mentioned.

Mornin',

I stopped by the new parkin’ lot construction just south of the Police Station Friday. There was a bit of a scare when they started movin’ dirt around. They discovered some soft spots and were afraid a foot or so of soil would have ta be replaced over the entire area. After further diggin,’ they found three or four soft spots and seemed ta think that was all that would be needed ta be removed. Friday afternoon, the estimate was around 300 cubic yards of fill would have ta be brought in to replace the removed dirt. There will be some additional cost involved, but nothin’ like what was involved with the Police Department or City Hall.

The dirt movers caught some luck in not havin’ rain so the job seemed ta be progressin’ nicely. The new lot should be gettin’ a coat of pavin’ soon.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Dear Al: I always start off each growing season with sharp shovels and hoes. You wouldn't believe how much faster you can chop down weeds or dig a hole for a tree when you have a sharp tool. It takes about 10 minutes to sharpen each tool, and it usually lasts me a whole season. Sharpening a shovel also takes the strain off its handle, since you don't have to put so much weight behind it when you're using it. - M.K.

Q. I have 4-inch ceramic tiles around my kitchen sink and on my counter tops. The filler between the tiles has worn down in some spots, and it looks bad when it is dirty. Is there a way to fill in these bad spots? - G.P.

A: The filler between the tiles themselves - the grout - is available in a ready mix or powder form.

The filler between the sink and the tiles is usually caulk. Get a caulk specified for use on tubs or sinks. Since the caulk has some flexibility, it can better handle the problems of expansion and contraction between the two different materials, tile and sink.

Remove the old grout and fill the joints with the right color of new grout, and use the caulk where it is needed.

A SUPER HINT - Instead of mowing over your lawn sprinkler heads or trying to edge around them, use a tin can. Empty the can, and clean it out. Place it, open-side down, over the sprinkler head and push down. The can will cut right through the grass, and you can pull the sod right up.
