today's
laugh
The astronomy professor was lecturing.
"I predict the end of the world in fifty million
years."
"How many?" cried a
frightened voice from the rear.
"Fifty million years."
"Oh," said the voice with a
deep sigh of relief, "I thought you said fifteen
million."
Professor- "Can you tell me
anything about the great chemists of the 17th
century?"
Student - "They are all dead,
sir."
Professor - "Young man, are you
the teacher of this class?"
Student - "No, sir."
Professor - "Then dont talk
like an idiot!"

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
CARTHAGE LOSES ANOTHER.
Carthage has lost another of her
excellent teachers. This time it is Miss Mary E. Kennett,
who is one of the most experienced and successful primary
teachers in the Carthage schools.
During the recent meeting of the state
association of school boards, a member of the Kansas City
school board saw some specimens of work from Miss
Kennett's room in the exhibit at the Central school and
he was much impressed with them. He investigated in
regard to her further and the result is that a letter has
now come asking her to come to Kansas City at once to
take a position now open for her.
As the offer means a promotion and an
advance in salary she has accepted and will leave for
Kansas City tonight. This now makes eight teachers who
have been taken from the Carthage schools for positions
in Kansas City.

Today's Feature R-9 Schools Going High Tech.
Assistant School Superintendent
Larry Linn reported during the R-9 School Board
meeting Monday night that improvements to the
Junior and Senior High heating and air
conditioning systems continues on schedule. He
also said that preliminary plans for a computer
lab on the fourth floor of the high school have
been developed and grant funding will underwrite
a portion of the project.
Curriculum Director Gary Reed
reported that the installation of the Junior High
Career Technology Lab and the You-Turn School
network has been completed. The district now has
600 networkable computers and 16 separate Novell
networks. Reed says that specifications for a
fiber optic access system are being developed
that will allow all schools in the district to be
linked. The district wide network could carry
data, video, and telephone transmissions with
transfer speeds of up to one gigabyte per second.
Technology Coordinator Cindy
Rogers is planning to conduct a summer computer
in-service session for R-9 teachers.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
So far Ive lost all
battles of the strawberry war. The score so
far is varmints 3, me none. The critters
dont even have the decency just to eat
the plant and get it over with. Instead, they
wait until just a day before ripeness and eat
just the red portion of the immature fruit.
Drives me nuts.
A fortress of old screen
doors is bein planned and construction
should begin soon.
I havent actually
seen the scavengers committin their
evil deed, but have watched as that pair of
feathered reconnaissance operators carefully
tested the defenses. They may be entirely
innocent, but they look like pretty shady
characters from my vantage point on the porch
swing. My first hope, the cat, has no
interest in guardin the garden. Or,
maybe it has seen the enemy. Strawberry
snatchin must be a terrible, scary
thing to witness.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.
