today's laugh

A reader doesn’t understand why goods sent by ship constitute a cargo, while goods sent in a car are a shipment.

"Have a cigar?"

"No, thanks - sworn off smoking."

"Well, put one in your pocket for tomorrow."

"I drink about fifty cups of coffee a day."

"My gawd. Doesn’t that keep your awake?"

"Well, it helps some."

"How big is a battleship?"

"What kind of battleship?"

"A big one!"

"How big?"

"That girl looks like Helen Black, doesn’t she?"

"Her dress isn’t black."

1898
INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Changes in Officers.

The war excitement, and the approaching state encampment in Carthage are giving the Sons of Veterans quite a boom. At their meeting last night several applications for membership were received. The resignation of James Hill as captain, on account of his absence with Company "A," was accepted and First Lieutenant Joseph Milnes was promoted to fill the vacancy. Second Lieutenant O. P. Grissom was promoted to first and W. A. Wilkins elected second.

An Interesting Relic.

J. W. McKee, a veteran of U. S. Army and 31st Ohio Veteran Battery, tramped into town today from his home in Cedar county. He is hunting work as a blacksmith. He has in his possession a relic of the Revolution. It is a belt plate of brass, bearing date 1776, with a palmetto tree embossed thereon; also two shields on which are inscribed the words "While we live there is hope," and "With bravery sufficient we are endowed."

Chief Ellefsen Announces Retirement.

Police Chief Ed Ellefsen presented Mayor Kenneth Johnson a letter of resignation yesterday. The letter addressed to the Mayor and Counci is as follows:

"After having had the honor of serving the citizens of Cartgage as police chief since May 1, 1979 I reluctantly report my intent to retire from the Carthage Police Department as of Friday, June 5, 1998.

"As I have previously shared, I had planned to retire three (3) years hence, BUT, the Mid-States Organized Crime Information Center’s (MOCIC) board of directors have determined their desire that I serve as the director of MOCIC. Be assured I did not apply for this position, nor have I applied for any other position while serving as your police chief. Whether this new position and challenge works to my advantage is as yet unknown. A known fact is, this opportunity is not likely to repeat itself and if I chose not to accept this opportunity now, I would always wonder, ‘what if?’

"My last day on-duty is planned for Friday, June 5, 1998. Starting Monday, June 8, 1998 I will be using my four (4) weeks of vacation. My vacation, along with my personal leave day, results in the day proceeding my retirement to be Tuesday, July 7, 1998.

‘I will make myself available to assist with any transition matters you deem appropriate. Steps have already started so as to properly deal with Marian Days.

"Again, it has been an honor serving as the Police Chief of Carthage these nineteen (19) years, working with such a dedicated and talented staff. I have likewise worked for many fine individuals as they served their constituents as members of the City Council or as Mayor."

Respectfully,

Ed Ellefsen

New Board Member

Release from artCentral

The flowers are really coming along. Hopefully the rain this weekend will be enough to soak in well and really give them a boost. Again, we want to thank Steve and Eda, the owners of Alexandria's Country Garden and Greenhouse, for their very generous donation of flowers.

This past Tuesday evening we held our annual Membership Meeting. All members were encouraged to come out and sit through a regular Board of Directors meeting. We have decided to expand our Board by two more seats and the membership was able to vote on one new nomination. There was also some time for the members to have an open discussion with the Board and offer suggestions and helpful criticism. We appreciated their input and thank them for their time.

Ron Peterson, Jr. was nominated by member Ruth Kolpin. Member Sandy Higgins seconded that motion. Discussion was followed by a vote of the membership and Mr. Peterson is now a member of our Board. Welcome, Ron, we look forward to working with you.

At this meeting Helen, Membership Committee, informed us of her plans to redesign our membership form, get them printed and start another drive. She reported the great news of a whopping 102 members.

This time last year we had a membership of 35. Keep up the good work, Helen.

The Planning Committee handed out a schedule of events. This outlined upcoming workshops, shows, receptions and a summer fund-raiser. Those events fill up our calendar through mid-November.

We are now actively seeking another new Board member. Any of our members can nominate someone or suggestions from the general public are welcome. However, the person or persons nominated should be contacted prior to their nomination to make sure it would be something they would like to do. Terms for our Board are for three years.

You don't have to be a Board member to be involved in artCentral. Anyone interested in the arts or just in community service would be welcomed with open arms.

There are a number of areas we could use some assistance; such as cookbook sales, children's art education , arranging adult workshops, and of course, there are always a couple of days we are not open and would like to be.

Think about it, and call us if you have any questions or suggestions. Our number is 358-4404.

The Carthage Municipal Pool will be opened May 23rd for the Memorial Day Weekend. It will close and then reopen May 30th and 31st. It will close again and then open for day-to-day operations on Thursday, June 4th.

Pool hours will be: 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday; and 1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

It was just a pleasant picture. The guy was backin’ up to pull out of a parkin’ spot. It so happened that maneuver blocked the drive I was attemptin’ to enter. Suddenly realizin’ I was waitin’, the fella placed the biscuit of some kind he was eatin’ in his mouth, turned to me and waved in a friendly way, put the car in drive and drove off.

I can only suppose he was smilin’ behind that large hunk of bread in his mouth, all I could see was crust and his eyes peerin’ over the top.

I suppose that some might have been embarrassed in that situation. I don’t think the other driver was in this case, and I certainly wasn’t. It was merely a pleasant exchange of ever’day circumstances. If you happen to get caught with your mouth over full, just wave big and drive off. It’s the friendly thing ta do.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Love that tea tree oil! We have already had the "misfortune" of having to treat two spider bites with it and they have healed with only minor scars. For those of you who are not yet familiar with this first aid kit necessity, it is a broad spectrum fungicide and antibacterial agent. It is able to penetrate the skin and treat microbes without damaging the healthy cells. It is soothing and has a topical anesthetic and anti-inflammatory effect.

Some uses of tea tree oil include:

Boil: Apply oil on the spot 2 or 3 times a day.

Arthritis: Mix 3-5 drops into a cold pressed oil and massage into effected area.

Nail infections: Soak fingernail or toe nail in tea tree oil for 5 minutes or so. I have found it effective to apply the oil to the gauze part of a bandage and cover the nail overnight.

Sprain: Rub pure oil into he sprain for relief.

Cuts: Dab oil on cut.

Athlete's foot: Apply pure tea tree oil or the cream to dry feet. A foot soak may be helpful, as is using the tea tree oil soap on a regular basis.

Gums: Mix a little with warm water and swish in mouth. May help with that sore throat also.

And the list goes on and on. My Dad smelled it many years ago and told me that it was issued during the Korean conflict for "foot rot." This oil is one of my favorites, in spite of its distinctive odor.

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend. Aloe Vera is great on sunburns!
