Teacher-"Didn't Joshua Morgan help you do this sum?"

Willie-"No'm."

Teacher-"Are you sure he didn't help you?"

Willie-"No'm, he didn't help me; he did it all."

A little girl was describing here first elevator experience.

"We got into a little room," she said, "and the upstairs came down."

"What is the plural of man, Willie?" asked the teacher.

"Men," answered Willie.

"And, the plural of child?"

"Twins," was the unexpected reply.

LIGHT COMPANY PROPOSITION.

Possibly Little To No Profit.

We may be asked, "Then why do you make it with no profit?" We answer simply because we have a large amount of capital already invested in the lighting business in this city and considerable more provided for in extending gas mains and improving plant and in renewing our electrical machinery.

There is no room for profit in running more than one light plant in Carthage, whether run under municipal management or by private capital. With the great taxing power of the city it might for a time run a light plant regardless of cost, competing with one company, not only in street lighting but also in commercial, until it wiped out our capital, in other words took out our life blood. If we can have a fair show in the commercial business we are willing to come down to the cost point in street lighting.

Commissioner Johnson Surprised by Conflict.

Eastern District County Commissioner Ben Johnson, appointed by the Governor to complete Mike Cloud's unexpired term, says he will stay on the job even without a raise.

In an interview with the Mornin' Mail Johnson said he was told when he was considering the job that the salary would be $41,350 after the first of the year , but he was not sure of the source of that information. The salary is currently $26,000.

"It certainly gave me heartburn when I found out that this question did exist," said Johnson. "It was kind of a bomb," he said, referring to a letter of opinion from County Counselor Jim Spradling that says the raises would be contrary to the state constitution.

"But nevertheless," said Johnson, "I'm in it for the term. I have in fact resigned from Eagle Picher."

Johnson and Western District Commissioner Anna Ruth Crampton have both requested an increase in salary of $15,350 be placed in next year's County budget. According to Crampton, some other first class counties are allowing similar raises for Commissioners. Salaries are set by statute as $2,000 less than the Presiding Commissioner.

Mornin',

The first look at the county budget numbers by some of the elected officials wasn't a pleasant site. There is a projected revenue of a little over $9 million and still about $11 million left on the expenditure side.

Presiding Commissioner Hensley thinks there needs ta be another million or more trimmed out. There was no rush to cut budgets from the elected officials attending the meetin' yesterday. Several were not happy with cuts already made on their individual proposed budgets.

Hensley once again stated his amazement that the Carthage and Webb City school districts have nearly $5 million more to operate on than the whole of Jasper County. There were rumblings of a law enforcement tax bein' looked into.

About $6 million of the budget is for salaries. A budget must be approved by January 10, 1999.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Intro to the Internet.

Where do all these service come from?

Service like Web pages, FTP sites, News groups, E-Mail, Ect., are all individual function of these computer we call servers (or hosts). Some servers don’t have many features at all, while other servers have all kinds of services available.

Luckily for you and me, the servers know who they are, and they know where the other computers are as well. When you make a request for a Web page, the servers work together to help you find the server where that Web page exists. If one computer is down between you and the server you’re asking for, the other computers will help to find a path for your request to travel on. Once the path is finally resolved, the connection is made, and you see your Web page. The same is true in regards to most of the requests over the Internet.

In Review

The Internet is a huge collection of computers world wide. They are connected to each other by a method that guarantees access (provided that computer is operational and connected to the network). There are servers (also referred to as "hosts") that provide services of all types. No one person or group owns the Internet, yet there are many committees and organizations that supervise its development evolution.
