today's
laugh
They were rather late in starting for
the station and his wife said, "You run ahead,
Joshua, and hold the train."
"Yeh!" he answered
sarcastically. "And what particular hold would you
like me to use-the head-lock, scissors or
half-neslon?"
Mr. Slowwit-"I-er-er-am going to
tell you something that er-er-will no doubt surprise you.
I-er-er-think--"
Miss Kutting-"Well, that is a
surprise. Funny Funny I never noticed it before. How long
have you been thinking?"

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Town Lighting Issues.
A preconceived opinion is not easily
changed. No good can come out of Nazareth! Tax payer
asserts in the columns of the paper that "in all
cities and even small towns and villages gas has been
cast aside as being out of date."
Taxpayer probably intended to state the
facts, but he would find on closer investigation that the
contrary is true. Gas as now used in specially
constructed lamps with Welsbach burners has been and is
being rapidly introduced as a superior means of street
lighting in the principle cities of the world, as well as
in the scores of lesser towns in this country, with
uniform good results, as may be seen by numerous
unquestioned testimonials in my possession.
Mrs. A.F. Wise and daughter, Miss May,
returned this morning from Central Missouri, where they
have been visiting several weeks at Pisgah, California.

Today's Feature County Democrats Could Gain Majority.
The five write in candidates
running for the office of County Collector face
multiple obstacles in their hopes for election.
Few have had time to mount any type of campaign
because of the short amount of time since it was
announced that Steve Holt was removed from
office. Holt is the only candidate that will be
on the official ballot. All write in candidates
will be listed at all polling places, but
officials at the poll cannot volunteer
information about the write in's unless asked.
Other races include a challenge
to Republican Presiding County Commissioner Danny
Hensley by Democrat Jana Dahmen. If Dahmen is
successful, it would mean that the three member
Jasper County Commission would be in control of
Democrats for the first time in recent memory.
Democrat Ben Johnson was appointed last week as a
replacement for Mike Cloud who resigned. That,
along with appointment of Democrat Art Wilson as
interim County Collector, puts the number of
Democrats in elected positions at five including
Assessor, Circuit Clerk, and Coroner.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
I've spoken to what most
would consider "old timers" of the
area and they can't remember any time when
the Democrats held so many positions in the
County.
There is little argument
that the county populace has changed its
political stance however, three of the five
positions were appointed by Governor
Carnahan.
There are indications that
there is still a willin'ness of the Democrats
to challenge and put up a good run. The two
best examples of that are the campaigns to
unseat incumbents Presiding Commissioner
Danny Hensley and State Representative Bubs
Hohulin. Although Republicans seem to down
play the challenge, there is an effort to
make sure voters don't sit at home on
election day. The fear is that folks who are
content might not see a reason for getin' out
ta vote. The fact is, votin' is always a good
idea.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin'.

The Super Handyman
Dear Al & Kelly: I've
always used graphite to lubricate locks. It's
just something I was raised with, and it works
great. I also have found that you can get
graphite from a pencil. All you need to do is rub
a pencil back and forth over the key and then
stick the key in and out of the lock a few times
to lubricate the lock. It works just as well and
is actually cleaner to use.
When you see a bargain price on
caulk, you might want to stock up. While the
caulk cartidges are handy to use, however, they
can be a pain to store, particularly if you have
a bunch of 'em. Because of their tubular shape,
they tend to roll all around the shop once they
get knocked over. You can make a simple storage
rack ofr the cartridges with PVC pipe.
Cut sections of the plastic
pipe about 12 inches long, and glue a bunch of
them together ina pyramid or some sort of
stack-like a wine rack.
You then can stick the caulk
cartridges and some other shop materials into the
tubes, and they will be right there when you need
them.
The storage rack is simple to
make and doesn't take up much space.
SUPER HINT-Preventive
maintenance usually is easier and less costly
than damage control. To really clean the coils of
your refrigerator, make your own crevice toll
from a paper-towel roll. Just flatten it a little
and tape it onto the end of your vacuum hose.
