today's
laugh
Bobby had been to a birthday party,
and, knowing his weakness, his mother looked his straight
in the eye and said," I hope you didn't ask for a
second piece of cake?"
"No," replied Bobby. "I
only asked Mrs. Smith for the recipe so you could make
some like it and she gave me two more pieces just of her
own accord."
They were sitting in the barracks
swapping yarns. "Ever hear this one?" asked one
of the group. "A dog was tied to a rope 14 feet
long. Twenty feet away was a fat, juicy bone. How did the
dog get to it?"
"Oh, that's old stuff,"
answered one of the marines, "You want some bird to
say 'I give up,' and then you'll say, 'That's what the
other dog did.'"
"No, you're wrong for the dog got
the bone."
"Well, how did he get it?"
"Why, the other end wasn't
tied."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Differences Are Marked.
An observing member of the force in the
circuit clerk's office said today: "Divorce suits
are being filed thick and fast now for the September term
of circuit court, and you ought to see the faces some of
the plaintiffs wear when they come up here. It's very
different up here to what it is down in the recorder's
office.
Hardly a day passes that Mr. Sigler
doesn't issue at least one marriage license, and the
happy smiling face of the groom-to-be is always in
evidence. Down there it is nearly always the man who
attends to the legal part of the procedure, but up here
it is usually the women in the case who has the papers to
file, and she does not come with a smiling face.
L.E. Clemons, traveling representative
of the "Rural World," spent today in Carthage
the guest of the market fair promoters.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
I always dread the end of
daylight savin's time. It's bad enough that I
gradually realize that the night is movin' in
sooner than it should. The shock of the
drastic measure of losin' an hour all at once
seems so final. Winter is comin'.
It's not even that I mind
winter that much. A good crisp mornin' with
the sun shinin' is always good ta wake up to.
It's the long periods no natural light that I
oppose.
There is some comfort in
the fact that by the time we "fall
back" it is a short time to December 21
when the sun begins taking back the days,
gradually gaining the minutes of sunshine
ahead of the dark.
'Course there is the
welcomed lack of lawnmowin' and other less
than appealin' outdoor activities that come
to a screachin' halt with an early sunset. It
does seem a shame that the critters of the
night wouldn't take more of a likin' to
winter instead of interferin' with the back
yard barbecue.
This is some fact, but
mostly,

Weekly Column
Intro to the Internet.
If you get an advertisement or
such, make sure to send a reply back. Like I said
earlier, we get enough junk mail at home...
Have you ever heard of
Smileys? They came about as a result of
Netiquette in an attempt to develop a way to
express emotion more effectively in an email
message. At the end of a sentence that is
supposed to be describing something happy you
might put this type of smiley : ) (its a
sideways Happy face), or if you are sad about
something you might type : ( . One more example
...lets say your being sarcastic or kidding about
something. You might type;-). (The semicolon is
supposed to make it look like its
winking..get it?!?).
Other Netiquette guidelines
come about when you are creating a World Wide Web
site. Concepts such as having too many pictures
or black background with white text are sometimes
considered a violation. Blinking text can also be
considered a violation by some. Actually,
anything that might slow down your connection to
that particular page may be termed a violation of
Netiquette!
To be totally honest... I guess
just about anything that could get on your nerves
or annoy you would be considered a violation of
Netiquette. The whole point is, if it annoys you,
it probably annoys others as well.
