today's laugh

Two small girls were playing together one afternoon in the park.

"I wonder what time it is," said one.

"Well, it can't be four o'clock yet," replied the other magnificent logic, "because my mother said I was to be home at four-and I'm not."

Little Willie had gone to bring the kittens in. His father, hearing a shrill meowing, called out: "Don't hurt the kittens Willie!"

"Oh, no," said Willie, "I'm carrying them very carefully by the stems."

"How would you like to learn to ski?"

"Oh, I'd jump at the chance."

SHOT IN THE BACK.

Private E.C. Bledsoe, of Co. "I," was sitting in his company street writing a letter and he felt something hit him in the back. He thought someone had hit him with a rock and began to look around to see who it was. He could see no one but a sentinel from his company, and he picked up a stone with the intention of getting even when he saw a ball roll from him.

Then he realized that he had been shot and he got sick and pale and had to be taken to the hospital. The bullet was from a 45-calibre Springfield, shot by someone out at target practice a half mile distant. The ball only penetrated about an inch, but it made a painful wound.

A number of Carthage folks are in Neosho today attending the Emancipation Day barbecue there. Several others went to Springfield and attended that celebration.

Proposed Memorial Hall Rates.

The cost of renting the auditorium in Memorial Hall could more than triple for some activities if a proposed rate increase is approved by the City Council. The proposed new rate structure would raise the rent from $200 for 12 hours to $600 for events that serve alcohol. In addition, new proposed regulations would require that, upon recommendation of City Staff, at least two off duty Carthage Police Officers would be required for rock concerts, dances and boxing matches. The recommended rate for non-alcohol events would increase from $150 for 12 hours to $300.

The Public Services Committee, which oversees the operation of Memorial Hall, have reviewed the proposal and have distributed it to other Council members. No formal action has as yet been taken.

Other newly proposed regulations would require at least one chaperone for every 50 attendees under the age of 18 at all events. A chaperone is defined as a person no younger than 30 years of age or a parent or guardian of an attendee.

Celebrating One Year in the Geranium House.

Well...we had another great opening last Friday evening. It was surprising to see so many of our guests wearing coats and sweaters! Boy! have the nights cooled off, or what!? We had a ton of out-of-towners! and since our artist, Gwen Long is from Arkansas we had visitors from Bentonville, Rogers, and Bella Vista as well as from Neosho, Dudenville and GET THIS! a couple from Toronto, Ont., Canada STOPPED BY on their way to California!! We fed them and sent them on their merry way. Actually, we fed them some really terrific stuff...sauted mushrooms on crispy, sourdough slices, blackbean and corn salsa with tortilla chips and creamed blue cheese with carrots and celery!! Yum! All in all it was a really nice evening. Thanks to everyone who came out! We really appreciate your support!!

A big THANK YOU to Bill and Marge Snow, Sandy Higgins, Helen and Mary for staying and doing the clean-up so the one who was supposed to do it could leave early! Thank you, thank you.

About the survey conducted by the Press.. we want to thank those 96 occasional readers to regular readers and the 31 readers who said they really liked us a lot!! Wonder why those 18 people hate this column. No telling. And who could hate Keegan Checkett's writings? Her coverage of the Olympics was refreshing and humorous...come on people..give us a break. At least some of us are trying to educate, entertain and inform. What are you doing as a community service?

Next month we are hosting the Art Forum meeting. Shellie and yours truly will be serving them a great dinner! One of our favorites...a spicy chicken salad with Jasmine rice!!MMMMM! We do good food around here!

We are still booking holiday events. Our galleries are a wonderful backdrop for any type of gathering! If you have any questions just call and we'll see if we can work something out.

Thursdays are my day here from 9-3 p.m., Fridays Helen is here from 10-4 p.m. and on Sundays Dytri is here from noon to 4 p.m. Any messages are answered right away so just call!

Jerry Ellis will be the artist showing throughout the holiday season!! We will host a reception for him on November 20th and he will keep his work in here until the end of the year. Yeah!! Maybe he'll have some never before seen paintings? Let's hope!!

October 25th will mark the one year anniversary for us in our beloved Geranium House!! If you have not been out here you really should come just to see this place. It is a great piece of Carthage history!! AND after the end of this year it may never be open to the public again..it might just fall apart and turn to dust. That would be a real shame. Anyone interested in a "Save the Geranium House" campaign? As part of our towns history shouldn't our town do something about keeping this little treasure in good condition?

Well..it's something to think about. Gwen Long's paintings will be here until Nov. 13 so come on out.

More........next week.

Mornin',

The function of Memorial Hall is about to be the center of discussion it appears.

There are those who feel that the facility should make its way. Historically the rents collected have covered a little as half of the actual operatin' expenses.

The other side of the argument is that the Hall should be a community perk. The thinkin' is local individuals and groups should be able to use the buildin' for little if any rent, especially if there are no payin' customers.

The discussion will no doubt be pushed along with the proposal comin' out of the Public Services Committee. If you've got any feelin's one way or the other, it's prob'ly time for ya ta make 'em known to your Council member or anyone who might listen. The community response to this question should make a large impact.

This is some fact, but mostly,
