today's laugh

Two small boys were out hunting in the woods and one of them stopped and picked up a chestnut burr.

"Tommey!" he called excitedly."Come here! I've found a porcupine egg!"

Mother-" If you wanted to go fishing, why didn't you come ask me first?"

Johnny-"Because I wanted to go fishing."

Little Bessie was sitting on her grandfather's knee one day.

After looking at him intently for a time, said:

"Grandpa, were you in the Ark?"

"Certainly no, my dear," answered the astonished old man.

"Then why weren't you drowned?"

Missouri Officers Complemented.

The following compliment to the officers of the Second Missouri is clipped from the Chattanooga Times of Aug 15th:

"The Times is glad to note the very gratifying fact that the Second Missouri regiment at Camp Thomas, presents the magnificent official record of having only eight patients at the division hospital and only seventy-seven indisposed in quarters, being probably the best record of any regiment in division.

"Col. Caffee and his corps of officers are to be congratulated and commended for this splendid showing which tells the story of Chickamauga's healthfulness under efficient and intelligent managment stronger than any language the Times can use.

" It gives the Times the greatest pleasure to pay this tribute to this splendidly officered company."

Republican Candidates Selected.

The Jasper County Republican Committee selected three candidates last Thursday evening to be considered by Governor Carnahan for the position of Eastern District Jasper County Commissioner.

Candidates nominated were Gary Coates, with 24 votes, Ron Ferguson with 12 votes, Don Davis, with 4 votes, and Rowland Diggs, with 2 votes. Each committee member present voted for one nominee and the three with the most votes were selected. Two votes were disqualified because the ballots contained two names. A total of 46 ballots were cast.

Committee Chair Steve Hunter allowed each candidate to speak for approximately two minutes each before the ballots were passed out to committee members. Gary Coates was out of town but spoke through a letter read to the Committee. In the letter, Coates reminded the Committee that he had been one of the eight candidates in the race for Eastern Commissioner and finished second to Mike Cloud. Cloud's resigned from the post on Sept. 30. The Jasper County Democratic Committee is scheduled to meet Oct. 14 to select their candidates.

Mornin',

It's all done 'cept for finishin' up.

I suppose the Democrats in Jasper County have been dormant for so long that ya can't fault 'em too much if it takes a couple a weeks to wake up from hibernation. And that they are a little leery of "goin' public" with their Eastern District County Commissioner hopefuls. It's prob'ly like gettin' rousted outa bed in the middle of the night with a visit from a long lost cousin. You're glad to see 'em, but you really wish they had called before they dropped in.

The fact that this may be one a the most important decisions local party has been involved in is prob'ly makin' 'em a little cautious also.

They have set a time and place for their election. It will be Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Courthouse Annex here in Carthage. That's at Central and Lincoln. Looks like there are now eleven unnamed prospects to pick the three ultimate candidates from.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Q: The concrete steps on the front of our house are slippery, especially when wet. We have a handrail, but it's just not enough. What can we do to make the steps safer? -M.V.

A: You have several options

You can use muriatic acid to etch the surface of the concrete slightly. You would use five parts water to one part acid.

If that doesn't give you the desired results, apply a deck paint or porch paint to which you've added some sand. If you go this route, buy the sand at the paint store, so you know it is completely dry.

Any etching should be done before any painting.

You also could apply peel-and-stick strips that are designed to make suck surfaces slip-proof.

Dear Kelly: I finally found a better way to keep my annoying, squeaky front door quiet. I now grease the old, heavy door with petroleum jelly. I had tried oils, but the dripped and stained both the door and my floor. Other stuff just didn't work. But the petroleum jelly sure does! It is easy to use, stays in place and works longer than oil.

A SUPER HINT-You can use inexpensive white vinegar for lots of things around the home and shop. For example, if you put a gallon or two into your dishwasher without the dishes in it, then run it through a couple of cycles, that can remove mineral deposits on lots of surfaces.
