today's laugh

First Shark: What's that funny two-legged thing that just fell in the water?

Second Shark: I dunno, but I just ate it.

How do you know you hit that duck?

I shot him in the foot and in the head at the same time.

How could you possibly hit him in the foot and the head at the same time?

He was scratching his head.

There's a package of fish here, ma'am, marked C.O.D.

Send it right back. I never learned how to fix cod.

  Today's Feature

Clark Upsets Harlan in 5th Ward.

Lujene Clark returns to represent the 5th Ward for a two year term after a year of watching from the sidelines. Clark defeated incumbent Donna Harlan in yesterday's election by a margin of 260 to 218. This will mark the second time that Clark has served on the Council. She will share the 5th Ward representation with Don Stearnes who defeated Clark in last year's election.

Clark's victory means that the Council will have two new members this term. H.J. (Just Jake) Johnson ran unopposed for the vacated Ward 1 seat of Mike Harris, and will begin his first elected term during next week's regular Council meeting. Incumbents Charlie Bastin, J.D. Whitledge, and Art Dunaway were also reelected and ran unopposed.

The School Board will have two new members as a result of the election. Less than a hundred votes separated the four running for the three available seats. The results were: Mike Wells-2119; Michael Woody (incumbent)-2067; Tony Diggs-2061; Craig Putnam (incumbent)-2029.

Jasper County voted 9910 to 8618 for the Proposition A (911) and 12180 to 6589 on Proposition B (concealed firearms).

Mornin',

The vote countin' process seemed to run smoothly for the new Circuit Clerk Jim Lobbey and his competent crew. At least on the outside lookin' in, ever'thing to be hummin' along. I've got to imagine that those who had been on the job since the early hours of the mornin' were glad to see the end of the day.

The couple of local races kept the interest of those gathered at the traditional gatherin' at the Courthouse and the weather was near perfect for the occasion.

As I made my way back to the office about 10:30, I witnessed somethin' that prob'ly hasn't been see on the square for some time. There in the midst of the kids crusin' the street was a couple and their two or three youngsters circlin' the Courthouse in a one horse buggy. Ya might watch your step crossin' the street this mornin'.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin'.

National Stress Awareness Day is April 16 this year. I don't know about you but I have stress every day of my life, not just on one certain day. We all experience stress in our lives, dangerous stress and healthy stress. Healthy stress is short term, and is needed for survival, our fight or flight response. But dangerous stress is long term and can diminish our ability to function in our daily lives.

Some signs of being over stressed are: a feeling of being overwhelmed, fatigue, inability to concentrate, lack of sleep, or sleeping more, depression, shortness of breath, irritability, headaches or just feeling that life is out of control.

Unfortunately modern day life puts us all under long term stress more often than not. Following are some ways to help you cope with stress in your life, an important factor in maintaining our health and well being.

• Exercise -it reduces stress hormones and increases healthy immune activity.

• Sleep -get at least 8 hours.

• Eat -a well balanced diet.

• Stretching -lengthens muscles, reduces tension allowing for body relaxation.

• Meditation -reduces stress.

• Supportive communication -friends and family who are supportive and listen.

• Massage -a powerful stress reducer. It increases immune response, decreases anxiety, and reduces soreness. Research shows that it relieves pain and increases productivity. All the attention is on you!

• Relaxation -use your vacation time, plan three day weekends, let go and relax.

• Have fun, don't sweat the small stuff.

If we all practice these things we should all be more relaxed as the National Stress Awareness Day approaches.
