today's laugh

Hello. Sorry I was late...

What's your excuse this time, Sam?

Well, I was called over to Lee's place to help out. One of his mules sprained a leg, so I made a splint for it. Then just as I was leavin' we found a sick calf, so I made a bed for him. And as if that wasn't enough, he's got two sick chickens and. . .

An' I suppose you laid eggs for 'em?

Is it correct to say: You have et?

No, it's wrong.

Why is it wrong to say: You have et?

Because I ain't et yet.

DROPPED INTO A MINE.

A Section of the Missouri Pacific Track Disappears and Delays Traffic.

The Missouri Pacific trains have all been about a half an hour late today, owing to a section of the track dropping into a deserted zinc mine, a mile and a half this side of Joplin.

The ground has been settling and was condemned a week ago, and the trains had been going over it with great care, while a new track was being laid, but yesterday afternoon the drop came, and since then all trains have gone over the Pittsburg and half road between Joplin and Webb City.

Trees Obstructing Vision, Double Decker Bus on Agenda.

The Public Service Committee will face a typically full agenda this evening in its regular monthly meeting in the Police Department.

Discussion on possible alternative uses for the double decker bus is scheduled with comments from Main Street Carthage Program Director Diane Sharits.

During last week’s regular Council meeting, the idea of placing the responsibility of the bus under the supervision of the newly created position of the Memorial Hall manager was approached. The Mayor asked that the Committee also assess that idea.

An update on the progress of the south fire substation in the base of the new water tower is on the agenda.

Two line of sight issues are to be discussed. The current line of sight ordinance requires "all corner lots provide sight distance triangles, the legs of said triangles shall be fifteen feet in each direction measured along the curbline or edge of the pavement. Such area shall be and remain free of shrubbery, fences, merchandise, equipment,

Mornin',

The meetin’s concernin’ the possibility of merchants gettin’ together to come up with some type of plan for sidewalk improvement for the Historic Square area continue.

The meetin’ last Thursday evenin’ drew a couple dozen interested folks to discuss their concerns about the project.

The idea seems ta be that there might be some state and/or federal grants available to help pay for some of the construction. There is naturally some resistance to anything that might cost the merchants/landowners. There is also some who don’t want things ta change at all.

A survey is bein’ put together to try and find some type of consensus for a design in general and the level of improvements that would be acceptable. The intense debate will follow no doubt.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Dear Carrells: While I was at the hardware store I remembered I needed a sheet of plywood, but I hadn't brought my truck. Rather than make another trip, I went next door to the supermarket and bought six rolls of paper towels. The rolls made great cushions between the wood and the roof of my car. I lashed the plywood to the car, and I got home without a scratch. And we won't have to be buying any paper towels for a while.

Q: Why all the talk about carbon monoxide? Doesn't it just come from cars?

A: Lots of things around the home can throw off carbon monoxide. Gas-fired appliances such as the heating system, range, water heater or clothes dryer can be guilty, as can the fireplace or barbecue grill. Be sure all are properly vented to the outside. Also, invest in a carbon monoxide detector.

Dear Al: We had a problem with our cat, Reno, who was using a spot in the flower beds as a litter box. I bought a battery-powered yard frog that has a sensor that causes it to croak when someone or something comes close. We placed the frog near the spot Reno had chosen, and when the cat would come near, the frog would croak and scare the cat away. We added a second frog at the entry to our den, and Reno no longer comes in for a nap on the couch.
