Electric Line Sued For $1,000.

M. B. Boyer brought suit today in the circuit court against the electric line for $1,000 damages. He claims that in July while he was approaching Webb City with one horse and a light hack loaded with vegetables, he was carelessly run into by the electric line crossing between Webb City and Carterville.

He claims that he received bodily injury keeping him from work, that his horse was permanently injured and that his hack and its contents were broken up and destroyed. He charges negligence and gross carelessness on the part of the motorman as the agent of the company.

City Property For Sale.

The Carthage City Council held a closed session after last Tuesday’s meeting to discuss and vote on the possible sale of several pieces of property in the City.

For the past few years the Post Office has talked of the need to expand. With limited space for additions downtown, the possibility of relocating the facility has been considered.

In an attempt to keep the operation in the downtown area the Council has been involved in discussions with the Post Office. They have expressed interest in the adjoining City parking lot located on Lyon Street just east of their location. After discussion, the Council voted Tuesday to offer to sell the land for $65,000.

"The Post Office’s interest in the lot was what prompted us to put the property up for sale," Economical Development Director Max McKnight,

McKnight has been in correspondence with the Real Estate Specialist at the Post Office, but nothing has been finalized.

"They have a certain process they have to follow and we expect to hear something from them soon," McKnight said. "However, this is not a quick process. We expect a 90-day response at the quickest, but more like 90 to 180 days is accurate."

During the meeting, the Council also addressed the lot north of Airport Drive across from Myers Park, which had been purchased by the City for extra air space when the airport runway was being used.

Because the air space is no longer needed, the Council voted unanimously to offer the approximate acre of land at $150,000.

The final piece of property discussed at the meeting was the tract of land between Tap-Jac and Wal-Mart. Amercom Properties has purchased options from the City on the property.

Although the deal was supposed to be finalized on August 26, the Council voted unanimously to extend a contract to Amercom Properties to September 27 for the purchase.

Mornin',

I’ve had the opportunity to see the ruts left by the settlers crossin’ the Santa Fe trail. Curious thing those records of passage. Years after any horse drawn implement has been moved over, they still sit as a monument to the traffic. The comin’ of the railways no doubt changed the patterns of growth and the survival of small communities along the once popular trail.

If you stand in the silence, you can almost hear the braying of some lonesome old mule still searchin’ for the good old days when four legged creatures dictated the path to the future. It is a romantic time to read about in some book, but the current realities of transportation and the fluid changes in economic factors make the horse and buggy days a lot less appealing.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Files are tools that will work only if they are kept sharp. That's why it's so important to store them so that the teeth are not subjected to a lot of wear and tear in a toolbox or a drawer. The best way to store them is in a soft envelope or standing up.

For a stand-up routine, get a heavy block of wood and drill some holes into it to hold the tangs. A tang is a file's tapered point.

If the file has a handle, there are pegboard clips that let you hang it from the wall.

Either way, your files will stay sharp and be handy.

Dear Carrells: We like to plant flowering vines on the side of our brick home. We have tried using the special fasteners that you hammer into the mortar, but they are hard to install and, once they are there, you have to live with them. We have discovered that you can get just as much hanging power from modeling clay. It can be pressed into the wall and molded around the vine to hold it in place. It works great, doesn't seem to harm the vine and can be easily removed when the growing season is over.

SUPER HINT - The next time you wax your car, park it in the sun for a while first, then do the waxing in the shade. If the car is warm, the wax will flow on much easier.
