A wise man once told me that the best thing about memories is that you can remember them without having to relive them.

Rebecca: Am I the first girl you have ever kissed?

Paul: Now that you mention it—you do look familiar.

To Raise the Quarantine Tomorrow.

It is the intention tomorrow to raise the quarantine of the parties on North Clinton street, who have now been hemmed in for nearly a month. There is not the least symptom of the development of smallpox among any of them.

Inside of a week or ten days the parties now at the quarantine hospital will also be ready to be turned loose, and unless new cases develop, of which there is no indication now, the smallpox episode will by that time be a thing of the past.

Street Sales Still Banned.

The City Council defeated a proposed repeal of section 23-415 of the City Code that prohibits the sale of merchandise or goods from a motor vehicle parked on City Streets Tuesday evening during its regular meeting. The proposed repeal was sponsored by Council member Charlie Bastin, Chair of the Public Safety Committee. Bastin and Council member Trish Burgi/Brewer voted for the repeal. It was defeated 8-2.

Bastin had proposed the repeal at two separate Public Safety Committee meetings and both times failed to gain support.

A proposed Council bill that would leave the ban in place but make exceptions for Council authorized vendors on streets closed for special events and allow mobile vendors such as ice cream trucks was passed by the Committee last Monday during their regular meeting. That bill will be heard in first reading at the next Council meeting.

The Council also voted in favor of allowing fireworks to be set off for one hour, from midnight to one o’clock a.m. on New Years Eve. The Council also gave its final approval for the Precious Moments TIF Agreement.

Mornin',

The City and County have run into another one a those parkin’ situations.

When the County purchase the former Nations Bank Buildin’, it was assumed that the six or so parkin’ spots on Main Street came with the property. The spaces are apparently partially on what is now County property, but ya gotta also park on a portion of City property. The question of just who has control of the spaces is now bein’ discussed. The County designated the spots for County employees but that seems to have ruffled some feathers.

The City Council Public Safety Committee was told thirty minute parkin’ would be an acceptable compromise and voted to allow it. That may not be the end of it.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Click and Clack Talk Cars

Dear Tom and Ray:

We have a 1988 Corsica four-cylinder with 140,000 miles. When I use the headlights, windshield wipers and air conditioning, and then stop for a red light, the car feels like it’s going to shake to pieces. I can stop the vibration by turning off the A.C.

My friendly mechanic just gave me a tune-up, new plugs, wires, etc. This hasn’t helped. I turned up the rpm by adjusting the screw on the carburetor. That seems to stop the shaking at idle, but it created a new problem. Now the rpm is so high that the car travels too fast in restricted zones and I have to ride my brakes to keep it under control. What can I do? Is there some way to cut off the A.C. automatically when I come to a stop? Or perhaps step up the rpm only when the car is stopped? — Kathy

TOM: Gee, I’m surprised you were able to adjust the carburetor, Kathy, because this car doesn’t have a carburetor! That’s a neat trick. I wonder if we could charge our customers for that. Remind me to put that on next week’s specials.

RAY: What you did was adjust the idle on the throttle body, Kathy. And that’s OK, but as you’ve noticed, your car is now idling dangerously high, and the speed is hard to control.

TOM: Adjusting the idle WILL solve the problem and stop the car from shaking and feeling like it’s about to stall. But as you suggest in your letter, it has to be done automatically, and only when necessary.

RAY: And believe it or not, your engine is designed to do just that! The idle is supposed to automatically adjust on this car through a device called the idle air control.

TOM: Therefore your idle air control system is malfunctioning. Take it to a Chevy dealer and get it fixed.
