today's
laugh
Jane, you were a long time coming up
here. Didn't you hear me calling?
No ma'am-not until you called the third
time.
Moths held a party at our house. It was
a swell party.
What are you talking about?
Haven't you ever heard of moth balls.
What's the difference between a sewing
machine and a kiss?
I don't know-what is the difference?
One sews seams nice and the other seems
so nice.
How's your uncle doing with his farm?
Not so good. There ain't so much money
in milk and eggs anymore. So he sits up all night trying
to think of something else for the hens and cows to do.

Today's Feature Blunt Urges 71 Upgrade to Interstate
Status.
Southwest Missouri Congressman
Roy Blunt is urging the Missouri Department of
Transportation to aggressively pursue available
federal funding to upgrade Highway 71 between
Kansas City and Joplin to interstate standards
according to his office.
"This vital highway
corridor is a lifeline for Southwest Missouri
commerce, economic development and tourism. It
deserves top priority for completion," Blunt
said.
Blunt and Arkansas Congressman
Asa Hutchinson pushed to designate the path of
Highway 71 between Kansas City and Shreveport,
Louisiana as a "high priority corridor"
in the 1998 Transportation Equity Act for the
21st Century. That designation qualifies Highway
71 for planning, design and construction projects
that would upgrade Highway 71 to interstate
status. Approximately $140 million a year over
the next five years is available in federal funds
for high priority projects like Highway 71.
In a letter to Missouri
Department of Transportation Director Joe Mickes,
Blunt urged that MODOT to apply for these funds.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
If ya haven't noticed, the Mornin'
Mail was erroneous a couple a time last
week. The most noticeable was the date was
wrong for Thursday and Friday. Although most
folks prob'ly didn't miss any appointments
'cause of it, just thought we'd own up to the
fact.
We did cause a little stir
by appointin' Art Dunaway as the interim
County Collector. 'Course the article was
supposed ta read Art Wilson instead. We are
removin' Dunaway as Collector for the record,
but leavin' him in his elected position as
Fourth Ward Council member.
Ya never know who to
apologize to when ya put the wrong name in,
so our regrets to either party that might
have been offended.
We do appreciate all the
calls and comments that were submitted by our
readers. At least we know you're payin'
attention.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin'.

Weekly Column
The Super Handyman
Dear Al & Kelly: I used a
candle to check my electric wall outlets for air
leaks. I held the lighted candle next to each
outlet on a windy day, so any air infiltration
coming in around the plates would cause the flame
to flicker. I found several with large air leaks.
So, I purchased the foam
insulators that are designed to fit behind cover
plates. After installing the foam, I retested the
outlets , and now I'm satisfied. I figure the
extra insulation will pay for itself this winter,
not to mention making the house more comfortable.
Q: The door from the
patio into the garage of my home has no light
switch, and so coming in that way at night is
like going through a scary mine field.
It's a rented house, so I don't
want to get an expensive wiring job. Any easy and
cheap solution?
A: You could buy a
battery powered fixture that mounts on a wall.
That would give off enough light for you to avoid
the booby traps.
If there is an electrical
outlet in the garage, you could install a night
light that has a sensor on it.
Visit a hardware store, home
center or lighting supplier to see what's new on
the market. You might be truly enlightened.
