What kind of animals do they have a the North Pole?

Reindeer.

Now, I'm not talking about the weather, and don't you go getting familiar with me.

I gave my cat a bath the other day, they love it. He enjoyed it, it was fun for me. The fur would stick to my tongue, but other than that. . .

He got ten years with two years off for good behavior, so he took the two years off after spending three days in jail.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Change of Postmaster.

J.P. Riley has received the appointment as postmaster at this place, vice M.H. Kenaga removed. Why a good consistent staunch Republican and an old soldier should be removed to give place to another applicant is a question that is now claiming the attention of the Republican patrons of the Asbury post office. Riley sent off his bond on Monday but as yet has not received his commission. As far as we can learn Mr. Kenaga has given universal satisfaction and so far no changes have been made by anyone of any discription to the department that we can hear of. Later developments of the case will be duly chronicled by your scribe.

P. & G. Depot Thieves.

Thieves entered the P.&G. Depot last Wednesday night and carried away the express money order book. Nothing else was taken that could be discovered. The same thing occurred at Waco a few weeks ago.

Fireworks On Sunday.

The annual City fireworks display will take place at Municipal Park on Sunday evening, July 4. The Parks Department has reported a large number of calls confirming the Sunday date. Traditionally the City has held the display on the fourth no matter what day of the week. The program will begin at dark. Weather permitting, the swimming pool will be open until 6 p.m.

A special Independence Day observance will also be held at Central Park on the Fourth. The activities will begin at 2 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. The program has been arranged by a committee from the Carthage Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2590.

Independence Day in the Park is a special project commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dick Ferguson will serve as master of ceremonies.

William Doubek, of Neosho, who is the Chaplain for the VFW’s Department of Missouri, will be the memorial service speaker and Keith St.John, radio station KXML’s program director will present Independence Day definitions between music numbers by the Carthage Community Band, directed by Marvin Van Gilder.

Mornin',

Just in case ya weren’t aware, the City is the sole sponsor of the Fourth of July fireworks display at the park. This year they are spendin’ close ta $10,000 on the show.

I figure that is a little less than a buck a person for those in the City, less if ya figure those who live on the fringe of town.

Although there have been attempts to enlarge the enterprise by additional co-sponsors, the community seems content to have a "small town" show and like it that way.

I personally like the gatherin’ before the show. Not so crowded that ya feel pinched, but one of the few times that the community shows up in force.

Whether ya watch from Muni Park, or from a convenient surroundin’ hill top, I’m pretty sure you’ll get your dollar’s worth.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Dear Tom and Ray:

Help! My 1994 Toyota Tercel with almost 21,000 miles has developed a strange scratching noise in the rear tire area. Sometimes it sounds like marbles, pebbles or ball bearings are rolling around intermittently, hitting against metal or plastic. There's no real pattern. Some days its more pronounced than others. The garage men checked the trunk area, and I removed anything movable. They tightened up the spare tire "gizmo" and packed around it to prevent it from moving. Then they put it on the lift, checked the brakes and still found nothing. The noise has become more apparent, but still inconsistent. Now they attribute it to bad tires (the original ones). Could that be it? Or are the mechanics fooling this old lady? - Madelyn

TOM: They may not be fooling you, Madelyn. But the first thing they have to do is make sure it's not a bad wheel bearing. That could be dangerous, so you want to rule that out first.

RAY: Assuming it's not an intermittent wheel bearing noise, it certainly would be a bad tire. Sometimes when a tire's thread starts to separate, you get a condition known as "tread squirm".

TOM: My brother gets a similar condition when the bill collector comes around to the garage. His name is Fred, and my brother gets "Fred squirm".

RAY: Actually, tread squirm is when the treads separate and get "smooshed" together as the tire turns. It's more likely to happen when he tire is hot, which would explain why it seems intermittent, and as the rubber gets forced together, it makes a sound something like an unhappy, medium-sized rodent.
