I have five handkerchiefs here but no shirt. Where's my shirt?

I notice one of the handkerchiefs has a sleeve. Why don't you send the handkerchiefs back? Maybe they would send you a shirt.

Say, that boy of ours in college must be gettin' on purty handy with carpenter tools.

What's he been doin'?

He sez he just made the basketball team.

I took first prize at a bridge game the other night.

Why cry about that?

They caught me and I had to take it back.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Child Painfully Burned.

Iva Graham, little daughter of Henry Graham, was painfully burned Saturday while trying to start a fire with coal oil. The flame blazed up into her face, blistering it badly and scorching off her eye lashes and burning her hair badly. A quick and plentiful application of a soothing oil relieved the intense pain and heat, and at last accounts she was quite comfortable.

Rev. Mr. Oren and friend, Mr. Near, of Carthage, of the Dunkard church, were here to Sunday services. Rev. Mr. Oren preaching morning and evening, but Mr. Near returned home in the afternoon. They were entertained by Mr. Vermillion and family.

There is a large amount of building going on around here. The indications are that Prosperity will be one of the best camps in this mining belt, not only on account of numbers of inhabitants but because there is plenty of work in view.

Recommendation to Simplify Reimbursement.

The Budget/Ways and Means Committee voted last Thursday to recommend simplifying the process of reimbursement for the expenses incurred by the Chamber of Commerce for marketing the benefits of the City of Carthage. The Chamber has contracted with the City for the last few years as the designated official marketing organization for the City. If approved by the full Council, the Chamber would use forms similar to those submitted to the State for grant funds.

The recommendation would also eliminate the past practice of requiring each type of advertising, such as print, radio, or TV, to be identified and adhered to. The new requests would simply earmark a certain amount of funds for each general activity, such as advertising, general office expense, and so forth. The Committee’s intention is to reduce the amount of paperwork required by both the Chamber and the City staff.

The Committee also will recommend that the contract be signed by the President of the Chamber Board rather than an employee. A provision for quarterly reports by the Chamber Board of marketing activities will also be made part of the contract.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

Never been to a tent raisin’ before, until last Monday down at the Library Gardens. Near a hunderd folks showed up to help raise the canvas for the Chautauqua event that will last all this week.

It was amazin’ to see how little individual effort was required when ever’one was pullin’ their weight.

There was a little huffin’ after drivin’ the tent stakes, but there were enough sledge hammers flyin’ ta make it go pretty fast. The six or so folks that pushed up the first main pole put on a little strain, but all in all, the number of helpers made the job go swiftly and without any major hitch.

There will be evenin’ shows ‘till Saturday. There are a limited number of seats under the tent, so don’t get there too late.

This is some fact, but mostly,

PRIME TIME WITH KIDS

by Donna Erickson

Do-it-yourself storytelling is a terrific way to let kids’ imaginations come out to play. Your children can share their creativity using this inexpensive felt story board you make together. When the story board is complete, the kids will enjoy creating their own characters and props, which will adhere to the board as they spin a tale.

To make the story board, cut a piece of sturdy cardboard from a cardboard box (Ask for a discarded box from your grocery store.) Cover one side of the cardboard with a piece of flannel or felt and glue it in place.

Before you make characters and props, talk about the story your children have in mind and help them determine what figures are needed. Beginners often feel confident telling memorized stories and rhymes, such as "The Three Bears" and "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed." Your older children may enjoy telling stories of summer adventures.

Use a black marker to draw the characters and props on nonfusible interfacing (available by the yard at fabric stores). The interfacing will adhere to the story board. Color the figures with crayon or colored markers. Cut them out with scissors. For a personalized story, cut out snapshots of your children, friends, pets, etc., and glue trimmed interfacing to the back. Magazine pictures work well too. Store the figures in a shoe box or a zipper-style plastic bag.
