today's
laugh
One of my pet canaries ate a lot of
frankfurters. He felt so happy he started to chirp. My
cat heard the chirp and ate 'em up.
Your cat ate the frankfurters?
No, he ate the canary.
What has that got to do with me?
You should keep your mouth shut when
you're full of bologna.
You can't believe everything you hear.
No, but you can repeat it.
Do you lead a model life?
No, I've done no posing.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
CHARGED WITH FRAUD.
W. W. Calhoun and J. F. Harrison
Bring Proceedings Against Jas. Luke.
James Luke was last evening arrested on
a warrant charging him with obtaining money by false
pretenses. He immediately gave bond in the sum of $1,000
for appearance for a hearing before Justice Woodward on
Wednesday.
The complaining witnesses in the case
are W. W. Calhoun and J. F. Harrison, who charge the
defendant with "feloniously and designedly"
contriving to "cheat and defraud" them. They
recite that lots 58 and 59 of the Empire Zinc Co.'s lease
at Joplin were owned by certain parties who offered the
same for sale. The complainants say that Luke represented
to them that the owners demanded $5,000 for the lots, and
that they were deceived thereby into buying a one-half
interest in the same for $2,500. In truth, they further
state, the owners of these lots did not demand $5,000
therefor, but were willing to take and did take $3,200
for them; and that the defendant knew that the
representations which he made were false.
Mr. Luke was seen today by a reporter
in relation to the above, and when asked for a statement
said that the arrest was purely a piece of spite work.
"These men are mad," he said, "because I
made some money on the deal.
Their claim is that we were partners in
the purchase of the lots. There was nothing of the sort.
Through B. A. I sold them a half interest in the lots for
$2,500. As soon as they found I was making some money
they began to kick and claimed I was overcharging them. I
offered them a trade for the lots for $1,000 more than
they paid, but they would not accept it. There is
absolutely nothing in the charges as will be proven at
the hearing next Wednesday."
Mr. Luke has engaged Howard Gray and
Thomas & Hackney to defend him.

Today's Feature HH Speed Reduction on Agenda.
The City Council is scheduled
to vote Tuesday evening on Council bill 99-36
which would reduce the speed limit to 45 miles
per hour on HH highway from Highway 571 to just
east of the 71 highway interchange. The State has
agreed to lower the speed limit and the City
ordinance would allow local enforcement. The
Council meets at 7:30 in City Hall.
The agenda also include the
vote on Council bill 99-37 which would require
vehicles to secure any load so as to not spill
onto the roadway. The ordinance wording was taken
from a similar state regulation.
In new business, the Council
will hear the first readings of various contracts
for tourism and marketing services from local
entities. The Chamber of Commerce, Carthage Main
Street, Carthage Historic Preservation, and
Victorian Carthage are included. A portion of the
contracts are funded by the 2% lodging tax
approved by the voters with some of the funding
coming from the Citys general revenue.
The FY1999-2000 budget,
recommended by the Budget/Ways and Means
Committee, is scheduled for first reading.

Talkin'
Mornin',
Summer hit in a hurry. With
the heat came the mosquitoes. The Street
Department will be puttin a fix on that
this week. The typical schedule is for
sprayin to be done on the same day that
your trash is picked up. If for some reason
your trash isnt picked up, they will
still be sprayin on the day its
supposed ta be picked up.
Accordin to Council
member Don Stearnes, he has received some
complaints about trash not gettin
hauled off. If this happens to you, be sure
and call the City Engineerin
Department. They log any missed pick
ups and can usually get things taken
care of the same day if they hear from ya by
noon. The number is 237-7010.
This is a local call, by
the way, the 237 prefix is now used by all
City offices.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

Weekly Column
The Super Handyman
Dear Al: My wheelbarrow just
isn't all that sturdy, and it tips over easily.
That's why I usually use my fertilizer spreader
to carry my yard tools. It's much more stable
than my wheelbarrow, and it carries quite a lot
of stuff for a small tool. I use it for
fertilizing only twice a year, and it wasn't
cheap, so I'm glad I found a way to get some more
use of it. - J. M.
SUPER HINT- Next time you open
a fresh can of paint, rub a coating of petroleum
jelly around the inside of the rim. It will make
it air tight and easier to open.
Q: I recently replaced my
central heat and air system. It seems to me that
the older one used to wait before the blower cut
on, and the new one starts blowing right away.
That first blast of cold air before it has heated
up has been very uncomfortable. Is there a way to
prevent this from happening, or do we just have
to learn to live with it? -O.S.
A: Your unit should have a fan
limit switch, which controls the fan so it
doesn't come on until the heater has warmed up
the air to a certain point. It also should let
the fan continue to run even after the furnace
shuts off, until the temperature is back down to
a preset point. The installers might have failed
to hook up the switch properly. We would go back
to them and have it checked.
