"Jimmie," said the teacher, "why don’t you wash your face? I can see what you had for breakfast this morning."

"What was it?"

"Eggs."

"Wrong, teacher. That was yesterday."

Mother-"What in the world has happened to you? Your shirt is full of holes."

Tommy-"We’ve been playing grocery store and I was the Swiss cheese."

Little Jimmie had watched his mother prepare food for the baby in the home. On being asked what the new brother ate, he replied:

"Why, Aunt Ida, he eats the formula."

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

The "Sheridan" at Manila.

J.M. Whitsett of this city is all smiles today on account of a cablegram which was received last night from Manila announcing the safe arrival at the Philippine Islands of the United States transport Sheridan having on board his son Lieut. George P. Whitsett. The Sheridan also carried 40 or 50 other Jasper county boys several of whom hail from Carthage.

Took the New Fire Wagon Home.

Jeff Kerns, chief of the Webb City fire department, came to Carthage today bringing with him Webb City’s new team which was recently purchased for the fire department of that city. The team is a fine pair of horses and when, in their shining brass mounted harness, drew the handsome new combination hook and ladder and hose wagon out of town, the outfit was the subject of much favorable comment.

Snakes and Street Vendors on Agenda.

The Public Safety Committee will meet this evening in the Police Department at 6:30. The Committee is scheduled to continue its review of the current ordinance that prohibits vendors from selling goods while parked on a public street. Mayor Kenneth Johnson has requested that enforcement of the ordinance be put on hold until it can be further clarified by the Committee. The ordinance was placed in the City code in the late seventies.

Committee Chair Charlie Bastin has favored eliminating the ordinance all together, but other Committee members have been hesitant to open the City streets to any and all vendors.

Also scheduled for discussion is the ordinance prohibiting exotic animals in the City. A request for review of the ordinance has be made by Chris Dyer of Animal World Pet Store. He would like to display large snakes in his shop and the ordinance prohibits constrictor snakes six feet in length or longer. He would also like to be able to give demonstrations to various organizations, including the schools. A video presentation is expected.

Mornin',

Looks like the deer hunters had ta hurry a little to get to the processin’ plant. With the warm weather, there isn’t the luxury of hangin’ the meat for any length of time.

The only time I was on a deer huntin’ trip, I was more concerned with keepin’ warm than droppin’ a deer. I got off one shot and didn’t have to worry about any processin’. The last I saw was a white spot disappearin’ in the woods.

From what I hear, the deer population is on the increase throughout the state. If ya decide to take a nature walk the next couple a weeks, make lots a noise so ya won’t be mistakin’ for a buck. I’m sure the hunters will appreciate it.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

Dear Al: Our old front entry was boring, so we redid it. On each side of our plain front door we mounted plain wooden shutters that were about a foot taller than the door so that they stuck out from the door. We found ours at a salvage yard (which was a fun shopping experience, by the way). Then we placed a third, smaller shutter across the top of the first two, making an interesting entryway. The climbing roses we placed on either side are growing over the top now and it’s just beautiful. — T. L.

Q: I want to make a retaining wall on our property by just stacking stones but using no mortar. How high can I safely go?

A: If you use medium-to-large stones, and since the stones will be slanting back toward the dirt that they’ll be retaining, you should have no problem going up to about 3 feet. I wouldn’t go higher.

Also, be sure that there is no problem with ground-water pressure, so leave some weep holes every couple of feet in the bottom layers of the stones.

SUPER HINT—If your pencil sharpener is getting dull, you can use a scrap of fine sandpaper to sharpen the sharpener. Fold a small scrap into a funnel shape around the end of a pencil and stick it into the sharpener and turn it a couple of times. That’s all it takes to make it sharp again.
