Small boy to father: "Here’s my report card and one of yours I found in the attic."

John: Did you know that when Hoover was president he gave all his salary back to the government?

Jerry: The idea certainly caught on. Now they have us all doing it.

Gary: I wonder why they hung that crazy picture in this art museum?

Ken: Probably because they couldn’t find the artist.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Check Ten Years Old.

During the past week a check was cashed at one of the Carthage banks which, on account of the time which has elapsed since it was drawn is of more than passing interest. The check was signed by Dr. F.W. Flower in favor of Dr. J.A. Carter and was tendered in payment of office rent ten years ago. Dr. Carter misplaced the check and forgot all about it until it accidentally came to light a few days ago. It was presented at the bank upon which it was drawn and as Dr. Flower is still doing business with the bank at which it was presented it was readily paid.

Rev. J. S. Porter and wife of Knobnoster, Mo., arrived Wednesday evening to spend three or four days with their son, J. P. Porter, night operator and clerk at the Missouri Pacific depot. Mr. Porter is a superannuated Methodist minister of the St. Louis conference and has many friends here.

No Action On Snake Ordinance.

The City Public Safety Committee took no action on the current ordinance pertaining to exotic animals during its regular meeting last Monday evening in the Police Station. A request for review of the ordinance was requested by a pet store owner in regard to the restrictions on constrictor snakes. The business owner was scheduled on the agenda for a presentation but did not appear at the meeting.

The ordinance prohibits constrictor snakes six feet or longer in the City unless they are part of a circus or a zoological garden. Many other exotic animals are on the list of prohibited animals. Included are all poisonous reptiles, baboons, game cocks and other fighting birds, lions, old world monkeys, Piranha fish, sharks, tigers, wolves and coyotes and others.

The Committee did vote to support a suggestion by Police Chief Dennis Veach to provide free taxi service to anyone wanting a ride on New Year’s Eve. Rides would be limited to within the City limits.

CORRECTION: The City recycling center is open Thursday through Saturday from 8:30-4:30 at the old landfill site.

Chamber Board of Directors

Dexter Friesen, President.

Dear Friends,

I appreciate the wonderful opportunity I have had to lead and work in cooperation with the Chamber/CVB Board of Directors and its membership for the past 4-1/2 years.

I hereby request you accept my resignation so that I can pursue other career challenges and goals, which are currently available to me.

I leave the decision as to when you wish my services as Executive Director to be completed to the discretion of the Board of Directors. I will be available to help for a reasonable amount of time through this transition period.

My best wishes for the continued success of the Chamber/CVB Program of Work. The future of this growing organization means a great deal to me, and I thank you for your tremendous support and guidance.

Sincerely,

Heather Kay Kelly

letter from ma

Unpleasant consequences don’t keep most of us from doing what we really enjoy.

I think of that when I remember how it was when our two boys, ages around six and nine at the time, climbed into the back of our 1949 Hudson to ride to Grandma’s house.

In those pre-seat-belt days, they, free from restraint, tried the patience of Pa and me by wrestling and scuffling as we traveled down the road.

The giggling, banging and jarring were distractions, not to mention the thuds on the backs of our front seats.

"What’s going on back there? I’m warning you!" Pa called out. He tilted his head back to see in the mirror what the boys were doing. A futile effort, for they had already rolled and bumped out of sight onto the floor.

We, and especially they, knew what eventually would happen. When Pa’s patience gave, he pulled to the side of the road and stopped.

Getting out of the car, he opened the back door. He disentangled the boys, and amid the protests of "he started it!" administered a couple of swats to the wrestlers backsides.

After they were back in the car and we started on our way again, it was quiet for a time.

Did the would-be heavy-weight champions sit quietly and not even touch each other during the next car trip? Of course not.

Why give up all that fun for a little unpleasant consequence?

Some Really Fabulous Paintings,

Poetry, Pastels and Woodcarvings.

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Again we had one heck of an evening !!! Last Friday was the opening for our latest exhibit and we had the place packed !! It was such a great evening for everyone....all of the artists sold at least one thing each, we had some new faces, had someone new in town become a member and the tortellini kabobs were a big hit !!

If you want to see some great local talent come on in. Penny Wilkinson’s paintings are fabulous !! Years ago she was teaching wood carving at the Friday evening sessions when artCentral was in the old grocery store. She later studied oil painting with Bob Tommey. Her work then focused on a western theme. Now she is painting still lifes using a new, bolder palette.

It’s obvious how talented she is !! The paintings she is showing here now are very richly done and will appeal to most everyone. Her colors are so vibrant and the details in these paintings are awesome !! Truly these are ‘works of art’ !!

Penny has also set up a little display of her Santas. They are her original designs she has reproduced and hand painted. You should check them out as a gift for the Santa collector in your family !!!

Perry Fleming’s poetry with computer generated graphics are wonderful. They are all original and selling quite well !! His verses are short, easy to understand and can really hit home. Check them out !!

Patty Moline is a whiz with pastels !! Talk about vibrant colors !! And how she gets such detail with "chalk" is truly a mystery !! All in all these artists are very talented and you really should stop in and see their work !! The group show will be up until the 23rd of December.

FYI....MSSC pottery students are having their annual pottery show and sale. It is held inside Spiva, the on campus one, and will continue until the end of the semester which is around the 18th of December. For more info call the MSSC art department and ask Joan or Jon Fowler what’s going on !

Whoever left the two ferns out back for us should have left their name so we could thank them !! We appreciate the donation.... we’re becoming quite well known as a home for wayward plants !! So THANKS to whoever !!

More.....next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations.

Mornin',

I would beg to differ some from the opinion of the evenin’ paper in regards to who benefits from the use of the Carthage Courthouse rest rooms. Although the city and its businesses do realize sales and the resulting sales tax, the County also gets a piece of change from sales.

Those most benefiting from the use of the rest rooms are those citizens who happen to be attending a festival or other organized event. In all likelihood, a good portion of those citizens reside in the County.

Keepin’ the lower level of the Courthouse available to accommodate the various functions of the citizens could well be a worthy endeavor. That is, of course, as long as no one is required to observe the Sunshine Law.

This is some fact, but mostly,
