laugh
Dora: If you don't stop playing those
drums of yours, I'll go crazy.
Albert: I'm afraid it's too late. I
stopped playing the drums three hours ago.
John: My cousin earns her living with
her pen.
Agnes: Does she write books?
John: No, she raises pigs.
Customer: When I bought this cat, you
told me he was good for mice. He doesn't go near them.
Clerk: Well, isn't that good for mice?

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Good Mineral in the
Shamrock.
The stuff in the drift at the Shamrock
mine on Turkey creek, near Joplin owned by Carthage
people, has been very promising for some time, and during
the last few days the drift has been running into
undoubted pay dirt. The work will be pushed from this
time forward.
The ore is found in the same hit from
which a neighboring mine is getting out a great deal of
stuff and the Shamrock gives every promise of being a
good thing. The owners of the mine are naturally much
elated over the situation. They are all Carthage men as
follows: Will Roach, W.J. Briggle, Col. Lawrence, Carl
Bryan, H.A. Smith and Fred Scott.

Appraisal
Contract Terminated.
City Administrator Tom Short
notified the firm of Hunter Appraisals of Joplin
last Friday that their contract for services was
terminated as of November 5. The firm was
supposed to provide an appraisal of property for
the proposed new airport site.
After several delays, an
appraisal was submitted to the City in early
October. The appraisal was reviewed as required
by federal regulations if the airport is to
receive any future grant funding. Upon review it
was found that key elements of the appraisal were
missing.
Hunter Appraisals was notified
of the deficiencies on October 18. According to
contract, the firm had 21 days to correct the
deficiencies. A faxed memo to the City on October
29 stated that the corrections were 70% completed
and would be delivered to City Hall by November
4. It did not arrive.
During the last regular City
Council meeting it was decided that there would
be no more extensions for Hunter past the
November 4 deadline.
Efforts to contact other firms
for the appraisal have been initiated by Short.

Talkin'
Mornin',
The main problem with the
cruise control bein available on cars
today is that folks, includin myself,
dont want to disengage it once
its turned on.
I dont know
bout everone else, but the odds
seem to be high that I will be movin up
on a slow movin car at precisely the
same time a car will occupy the left lane
next of me.
In a hunderd mile trip, I
can expect for this to happen at least once,
more likely two or three times. I suppose I
could alter the odds by drivin a little
slower or a little faster, but I cruise at a
comfortable speed. Just fast enough so as ta
not get a ticket I suppose. Ive heard
the comment that Im a half-fast driver.
Somethin they dont teach in
drivin school I suppose.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

The Super Handyman
Dear Al: My waffle iron was
always wobbly. It had some rubber feet on it, but
one was lost, causing the wobble. I found a
rubber plumbing washer that was the right size
and glued it to the bottom as a replacement. The
waffle iron is steady now, and it cost me less
than a dime to fix it. I also glued rubber
washers to the bottom of my phone, which was
always sliding round.
Dear Al & Kelly: I drive a
small sports car and cannot reach to the back of
my roadside mailbox. I put in a small aluminum
tray that is the same size as the bottom of the
mailbox. From the car, I can slide out the tray,
get my mail and slide it back in. I think the
tray originally came with a strudel that I bought
at a bakery. You could use a foam meat tray if
you can't find a metal one.
Dear Carrells: Our hallway
closet had a serious problem with condensation on
the walls and ceiling. We insulated the water
heater in the adjoining closet, and that cut way
down on the problem, but it still always smelled
stuffy in there. We decided to add some
ventilation to the closet. We just used a power
drill to make some holes near the bottom and top
of the door. To make it look more attractive, we
drilled them in a simple pattern. It looks like
we had the door customized, and several people
have asked us about it.
