"Some men thirst after fame, some after love, and some after money."

"I know something that all thirst after."

"What's that?"

"Salted Almonds."

"It takes Bill a day and a night to tell a story."

"He'd make a good bookkeeper, I should think."

"Why?"

"Never short in his account."

"Mamma, do pigs have babies?"

"Why of course, my dear."

"Some one told me they had little pigs."

Advice to Farmers of Jasper County.

John M.L. Gore, near the base line, says it will pay the farmers of Jasper county to "list" their corn. He lived in Kansas a few ago and experienced that it was a success there. He wished to try it in Jasper county, so he planted about forty acres very late and now he has it all laid by. It has a good color, is growing very rapidly, and people think he will be able to gather sixty-bushels to the acre. Mr. Gore says there are several reasons why he prefers to list his corn. It is easier and quicker planted, easier kept clean, and will stand the drouth and fall winds much better.

Joseph Ladd, the proprietor of the swing factory located in the old ice plant building, came up Thursday from Joplin and took charge of his business. He has been working on the Keystone hotel building on a contract for a short time, but recently was a resident of Edwardsville, Ill.

Record Residential Electric Sales.

CW&EP reports record residential electric sales of 8,038,674 megawatt hours for the month of August. The last record was 7,929,088 megawatt hours set last summer.

The public utility also reports sales of 720 MWh to outside distributors during August. The price received ranged from $60 to $255 per MWh.

CW&EP General Manager told the Board of Directors last week that the fiber optic backbone loop is complete. The office building and warehouse are currently being configured to allow networking. Accounting software that is Y2K compliant has been installed and billing software will be installed during the first week of October.

The Board of Directors has authorized Williams to research changes that might effect the new pole attachment agreement that will be drafted for the TCA Management Company which recently purchased Southwest Missouri Cable. The current agreement is nontransferable. It is expected that the new agreement will include higher rates for the cable company. The new contract draft should be completed by November 1.

Opening Reception For Andy Thomas.

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Tonight is the opening reception for Carthage artist Andy Thomas. His paintings will be exhibited here until October 29th. Come by for a while and visit ! The public is invited and refreshments are served...........it’s a great way to enjoy an evening of discovery !! You just never know what you might find once you’re inside our onimus front door !!

One thing you’ll find is a great system we’ve got going here thanks to all of our wonderful help !! Now that Danielle has started to college (we still have her 3 days a week) we need a few volunteers to help us keep our regular hours, so.....we would like to say thanks to Glenda and Dytri for their volunteer hours eack week ! We couldn’t do it without them !! And we’re happy to say Glenda is taking advantage of the breasfast room’s great light and has been seen with her easle and oil paints out !! Our mem-bers are always welcome to use our space for painting, sculpture, stained glass work............just about any-thing you can think of.

Our art library has really grown !! Thanks to a recent donation from Jane Kliendl we have added seven new (to us!) books ranging from perspective to Rodin !! We thank her for her generosity and support !! Anyone is welcome to use our library at any time, however....to check out books or videos one must be a member. Our member-ships are very reasonable and you get quite a bit for the money.

And again, speaking of money....we do not get an endowment from anyone or anything. The only things providing us income are a percentage of artwork sold, memberships, our cookbook sales and donations.

We are very fortunate that we have a permanent home now, and a very lovely one at that. We are trying to make good use of all the space provided (house, garage and grounds) by the late Katherine Hyde and hope she is pleased with our presence.

See you here this evening !!

More.....next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations.

Mornin',

Looks like there will be plenty to do durin’ the Maple Leaf Week. Most of the typical attractions plus a couple of special events. I see they are bringin’ back the Marching Cobras. If ya didn’t stick around after the parade last year, you missed a real performance. Be sure to put that one on your list of must see.

Although there is no theme as such for this year’s festival, there is some emphasis bein’ placed on all the marchin’ bands that come in ever’ year. The contest out at the Jr. High is another worth seein’, ‘specially if ya haven’t been.

The 4-H Country Fest will be out at the fair grounds again. Great fun for those who want to relax a little with the kids.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

Speaking of the subject of head lice or "bugs" as some call them is not nearly as obnoxious as having them. Denial that the itching around the ears or at the base of the neck may be lice could give them time to take hold. If you have the "itch" take a look and use a preventative measure before they do lay the eggs. I am told that they are rampant in the schools. That is the most probable place to notice such things because of the vast number of people in the same place. Lice are looking for a host. They don't care about socio/economic structure. They can be found in your local schools, clothing store, or even in a theater near you, or about any place that we share with someone else who may have had them either knowingly or unknowingly.

Using good sense and not sharing combs or brushes, limiting trying on hats and using a good shampoo and/or rinse with tea tree oil in it may prove helpful. There are choices besides the most advertised lice shampoo that are certainly more natural and work. A rinse with thyme after each shampoo may be beneficial. An old remedy was sassafras oil. Many of these items are available at local health food stores and may save you lots of trouble of getting rid of the little critters.

I personally believe that if the "stigma" attached to getting lice were removed and the children that get them were not made to feel as though something was "wrong" with them we could get this situation under control. It is sad to observe children who have been shamed because they brought this into a family. Yes, they are a lot of trouble, but so are a lot of other things and a child's dignity and self-esteem should not suffer because of some little tag along "critter". I also see plenty of adults with this situation.
