today's
laugh
A Scotchman was arguing with a
conductor as to whether the fare was 25 or 50 cents.
Finally the disgusted conductor picked up the Scotchman's
suitcase and tossed it off the train, just as they passed
over a bridge. It landed with a splash.
"Mon," screamed the
Scotchman, "isn't it enough to try to overcharge me,
but now you try to drown my little boy!"
Larry: My father won't let me have a
pet rock.
Steve: Why not?
Larry: He's afraid it might have
pebbles.

Will Take a Bride to
the Phillippines.
Rumor has it that one of the prominent
soldier boys of Carthage (an officer in fact) who is
bound for the Philippines, will soon marry a charming
Kansas City girl who has visited in this city recently.
The wedding is booked for the middle of November and the
bride will accompany her husband to the Philippines.
Sues Mine Owners for
$5,000 Damages.
Thomas D. Stephens sues the
Phoenix-Vernon Lead and Zinc company, of Joplin, for
$5,000 and costs.
He charges that in July while trying to
put a belt on a defective pulley it wound around the
pulley, and that the whipping of the belt broke the
plaintiff's wrist, sprained his leg and wounded and
bruised him in many ways.

Today's Feature
Hall Manager
Salary Questioned.
Public Services Committee Chair
J.D. Whitledge reported to the Finance/Personnel
Committee yesterday afternoon that a candidate
for the newly created position of Facility
Supervisor has been chosen. The responsibilities
of the position would be to supervise the day to
day operation and promote Memorial Hall and the
Civil War Museum. The Supervisor would report
directly to City Administrator Tom Short.
Short and Whitledge spoke with
the Committee about the starting salary. The
Council was divided on the subject when the
position was established several weeks ago. The
Mayor voted to break the tie vote in favor of
leaving the starting salary more flexible rather
than fixing it at the lowest level of a grade 10
in the City pay schedule. Grade 10a is $20,349
per year and grade 10 tops out at $25,807 per
year. Both Whitledge and Short recommended the
grade 10c as the starting salary, or $21,171. Two
on the Finance Committee wanted to start at the
10b level, while one agreed with the
recommendation. Committee Chair Lujene Clark vote
against the 10b level because she felt it should
be 10a. More discussion is scheduled for
Thursday.

PRIME TIME WITH KIDS
by Donna Erickson
After a month of changing
schedules and routines, its an ideal time
now to make a personalized phone directory of
important numbers relating to your familys
activities. So gather the Post-it notes dangling
from your phone, the tattered address books and
the kids fall sports rosters, and make
directory assistance a family project.
First, use a pad and pencil to
jot down the names and telephone numbers of the
important people in charge of your kids
activities. Encourage your kids to think of
activities they do during an average week. For
example, include soccer coaches, scout leaders,
piano and karate instructors and Sunday school
teachers in the directory.
Remember to include important
numbers at school, such as the names of teachers,
the school nurse and the principal. If the school
has a phone-in number for parents to call and
leave a message if a child is going to be absent,
or if there is a homework line, be sure to
include that as well. Then add your local
library, pediatrician, community center,
emergency numbers and, of course, your favorite
take-out pizza place.
Finally, include the numbers of
friends and relatives your family contacts
regularly.
Type or print the directory and
mount it on posterboard. Post it close to your
busiest phone. The next time Mom or Dad needs to
reach a scoutmaster or call in a sick day, the
number will be easy to find.
