Is he a good watch dog?

Rather. If you hear a suspicious noise at night you have only to wake him and he begins to bark.

How much is your hamburger steak?

$2.25 a pound.

But at the corner store it is only $2.10

Why don't you buy it there?

Because they haven't any.

Oh, I see. When I don't have it, I sell it for $2.00 a pound.

We came in on a radio train.

A radio train?

Yeah, it stopped every five minutes for a station announcement.

Short Agenda For Council.

The City Council faces one of the lightest agendas in some time for tomorrow’s regular meeting in City Hall.

The Council is scheduled to vote on Council bill 99-75 which will require anyone operating a motor vehicle in the City to have insurance. The bill mirrors the State regulations.

Also scheduled is a vote on the request for rezoning recommended by the Planning, Zoning, and Historic Preservation Commission and submitted by Ronald and Carolyn Erwin. The request is to rezone property located at 109 N. Maple from District C apartments to District D local Business.

New business scheduled is the Mayor’s appointments to the TIF Commission and a presentation by Cohen-Esrey Real Estate Services of Kansas City. The firm will be requesting an endorsement on proposed affordable housing development in Carthage.

The City Council meets each second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. A citizen’s participation period is always scheduled for any Carthage resident to present ideas or concerns to the Council and Mayor.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

I always have the urge to stop and take a look when I see somethin’ that looks like it blew out of a pickup along the road. I don’t recall ever actually stoppin’, but I always think I ought to.

I saw what appeared to be a mattress the other day, but as I drove by, rubber neckin’ all the way, it looked more like a big chunk of insulation or somethin’. Nothin’ I wanted, but I still thought about stoppin’ to check it out.

I suppose ever’one is curious about the possibility of findin’ some hidden treasure layin’ in the ditch, or in their attic or at a garage sale.

The fact is, usually, another man’s junk is just that.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Q: I put up a piece of pegboard and then found that it was warped in the middle. I was wondering if you have a remedy for fixing the warp without replacing the whole thing. — J.L.

A: Without even removing the panel, you should be able to add several spacers and screws where the material is touching the wall.

By doing that at the top and bottom and maybe a couple of other places, the warp should go away.

Q: My house has wood siding with a stain on it. For some reason, it has started to peel. I didn't even know stain could peel. I sure don't know what to do about it. What can you recommend? — K.D.

A: Since it is peeling, it must be a pigmented stain of some kind. A pigmented stain can be removed much like paint - which means scraping, sanding, sandblasting or whatever strikes your fancy.

Dear Carrells: I found a safer way to remove rust from old things around my house. I make a paste from table salt and lemon juice. I spread it over the rust spot and let it sit awhile. Then I use a steel-wool pad or some other type of scrubber, and the rust comes right off. It's much safer than using harsh chemicals. — D.M.
