A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Blaze at Saylor's Barn of Incendiary Origin. The fire department was called out last night to the old Saylor livery barn on Meridian. The blaze was started in two places and the evidence seems positive that it was a fire bug's work. The flames gained greatest headway in a room used for storage just behind and above the washroom, where there had been a large quantity of excelsior and other inflammable material piled against the wall. The fire burned briskly, the flame reaching to the roof and charring the boards slightly. In a feed box in a stall twenty feet from the other blaze a paint keg full of burning coal oil was found by the neighbors when they rushed in. The smell of coal oil was very noticeable last night and traces can be detected this morning. The barn is the property of A. H. Snyder and is insured for $1,500 through the agency of A. G. Newell & Son. There was no damage to the building.

The tinker put on a long look of misery as the farmer opened the door. "The blessing of the saints on you, sir," wailed the tinker, "tis I have been travelling the long white roads this day and the great emptiness inside me and the skin hanging about me the way that a coat would hang on a pole. Sure, it's not you, sir, that would see a man starve?" "I would not," said the farmer coldly, "I'd look the other way."
Two women met outside the supermarket. "How's your husband's golf game?" "Oh, it's interesting." "Interesting? How so?" "Seems the older he gets, the better he used to be."
The Budget/Ways and Means Committee met last Thursday evening in its final gathering before new Council members are sworn in at tomorrows regular Council meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to meet with department heads for their annual evaluation. Such evaluations are carried out in closed session. Before adjourning the open portion of the meeting, the Committee approved an initial schedule for budget hearings. The City departments will present their budget requests on the evening of April 16 and all nondepartmental requests will be presented on April 17. Committee Chairman Bill Johnson, Jackie Boyer, Lujene Clark, Nolan Henry, and Mike Harris, along with Council member Bill Fortune attended the meeting. A replacement for outgoing member Howard Schillinger will be assigned by the Mayor.

Q. I think we have a problem with an electric water heater. It doesn't heat the water as well as it used to. What should we do about it? - J.T.
A: Probably the most common reason for such complaints is that one of the heating elements has burned out on a unit that has two. The lower one is usually the first to go. With the electrical current turned off, use a continuity tester to see if the element is the problem. Two other possibilities: The thermostat isn't working as it should, or lime deposits have formed on the elements.
Q. I have vinyl floor covering in my basement. There are some large black stains that seems to be bleeding through from the concrete surface under the vinyl. I would like to put another layer of vinyl over this one but want to make sure the stains won't bleed through another layer of flooring. What causes the stains, and how can I block them? - B.N.
A. It sounds as though the stains are caused by moisture attacking the flooring's underside. The plastic coating on the old flooring probably would act as a barrier to prevent any problem to the new floor. However, I'd talk with a flooring dealer to make sure the new flooring can go over an existing floor and also get his thoughts on whether an extra barrier between the two floors might be best.
If ya watch the Council meetins on tv any, you may have noticed that one of the three cameras hasnt been in place for the last few months. Shortly after installation of the remotely controlled units, one began to malfunction. Fortunately, the center camera can pan the Chambers and everone can be seen, but Im sure some views are lackin. There have been mention of the repaired apparatus bein scheduled to be back in place shortly, but probly not in time for tomorrows swearin in meetin. This will no doubt not go unnoticed by some who will be aware of various camera angles and position. If ya happen to watch, pay attention to the twistin of necks and the swivelin of chairs to put the best face forward in some instances. Hopefully the third camera will return to its platform soon and help keep Council member contortions to an acceptable level. Wouldnt want anyone ta slip a disc.
This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin.
