'Excuse me, sir' said the farm labourer to his boss, 'I've been watching the bull chase your wife around the meadow for the past hour.' 'You fool, why didn't you tell me before.' 'Why? does she get tired quickly?'

A Big Hotel In Prospect.
Rumors That One to be Constructed Here to Cost $75,000.
It was rumored on the streets today that the plan of forming a stock company to build a big hotel here is being discussed by a number of business men. It is stated on good authority that the matter is under serious consideration and that it is more than a possibility.
The report is that the company will lease Mr. G. A. Cassil's lots at the corner of 6th and Main streets and there erect a handsome modern hotel of Carthage stone. It would only be a block from the square and directly on the street car line. The building, it is said, is to cost from $50,000 to $75,000 and the hotel is to be one of the nicest and best equipped in this section.
Circuit clerk Fred B. Norton and wife left last night for a trip to Port Arthur, Texas. They will be away about a week.
Mornin',
All I can say is it's a good thing that she was sittin' at a stop sign. I almost ran off the road just tryin' to figure out what in the world was goin' on.
Here she was, sittin' with no one near, laughin' herself silly. I looked around tryin' to figure out what she was seein' that I wasn't.
All I can figure is she heard somethin' on the radio that threw her into a fit of laughter.
Now I'm the first to stand up for the right of anyone ta be as funny as they want, as long as it's under controlled circumstances. Out in public, I think there ought to be some guidelines as to what is considered acceptable community behavior.
And what about that secondhand laughter. You know, when someone gets the giggles and even if ya don't know what's funny, all the sudden ever'one's laughin'. I'm tellin' ya it has no place on the public streets. No tellin' how many auto related injuries laughter causes in this state alone. Giggle free by 2003, there's a campaign slogan.
This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin'.
Ponca City Commissioners accepted the resignation of Assistant City Manager Tom Short during their meeting last Monday night, according to a Ponca City News article concerning the matter. The Commission also appointed a new financial director during the meeting.
It was reported that Short has accepted the position of City Administrator in Carthage, Missouri.
I have very mixed emotions about accepting the position in Carthage, the story quoted Short as saying. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the city personnel for over 10 and a half years and will miss Ponca City.
According to Short, the article said, arrangements were made with city officials in Carthage so that his new position will not become effective until Nov. 1, allowing adequate time for the transition for his replacement.
Shorts resignation came less than a week after another Ponca City employee, Harold Harris, left his position as city planner to become city manager in Newkirk and both loses have been difficult for the city it was reported.
We are very disappointed to have lost two staff members this week. However we are very proud that they have left to accept administrative positions, City Manager Martin was quoted as saying.
During the meeting, Mayor Marilyn Andrews named Mark LaBossiere as the new city financial director. Short had acted as interim financial director up until his resignation.
Dialing 9-1-1 to reach the Jasper County 9-1-1 Center from every telephone in the County will be possible as of noon on Friday, August 1st.
The Jasper County Emergency Board authorized the cutover at its meeting Tuesday night, reports Chairman Harlan Snow.
The Board also recognized that portions of the address database, the mechanism by which the physical address of the caller is displayed for the Telecommunication Officers, has some errors in it and is incomplete in certain sections of the County. The contractors responsible for making the changes are reportedly working on the last segments now. The Board wants residents to know that such errors will not prevent the caller from using the universal number, 9-1-1, however callers will need to verify their address with the TCO at the Center. This is essentially no different from the level of 9-1-1 service afforded to Joplin and Carthage area residents now and is still a major improvement for those residents that had different seven digit numbers for fire, ambulance and police to call as needed.
One call to 9-1-1 will get the services you need, said Bill Cade, Executive Director. Cade said the Telecommunications Officers are well trained, dedicated people that understand the mission of the 9-1-1 Center and will make every reasonable effort to get help to every caller.
The Board is very pleased with the staff at the 9-1-1 Center who have already demonstrated their ability and professionalism in public safety communications over the initiation period of the past 5 days. The 9-1-1 Call Center will directly dispatch fire, emergency medical and law enforcement services for 22 of the nearly 30 such agencies currently providing services to Jasper County residents.
The non-emergency number of the Center remains 358-7000.

What about yarrow? This astringent herb has shown up as a decorative plant in many flower gardens lately. You can now see it in paprika, yellow, red, and the natural white. It has been used to stop bleeding since the Trojan war when Achilles used it on his soldiers. That is where the generic name Achillea is derived. In Culpeper's journals it is noted for use in swelling and wounds. It appeared in the US Pharmacopeia during the 19th century. In the 1950's an alkaloid was found to promote blood clotting and stimulate new cell growth: thus, it promotes healing of cuts, wounds and burns by protecting against infection.
My favorite use of yarrow is in the winter for colds, flu and fevers. In an infusion (tea), it certainly displays its' bitter properties, but that is why it works so well. The fever tea is combined with a little honey and cayenne pepper. I have had people tell me drinking it when you see the first chicken pox pop out or measles will decrease the length and severity of the skin eruptions. Although bitter, chewing the leaves may help a toothache. Forget where I read it, but I also read that you can use it as a hair rinse to stop hair loss.
I had to trim my sage this week. It's growth has been about as rapid as the weeds! The leaves make a nice tea to aid the digestive process and of course, one could dry it and have plenty for spicing up dressing and other dishes. I like the smell of it burning. I bumped into Mrs. Aschwanden at the sidewalk sale and she mentioned making a delightful wine out of the flowers. Add them to a light white and let it soak for 24 hours.

Good Mornin' Jake and Carthage
Ya know, I was in town last weekend for the good ole Class of 1987 Reunion. It ain't been that long since I lived in Carthage, but it has changed. I still think its a beautiful city.
Hey, I wanted to say Thanks! to the organizers of the reunion. Y'all throw a good shin-dig, so Thank You to Jill, Billy, Mileigh, Jason, Paul, and every one else that helped. And of course, a bigger Thanks goes out to their spouses who "allowed" them to help.
Y'all in Carthage take care!!
