today's laugh

Every day Mr. Smith's secretary was 20 minutes late. Then one day she slid snugly into place only five minutes tardy. "Well," said Mr. Smith, "this is the earliest you've ever been late."

"Did you see that young lady smile at me?" "That's nothing. The first time I saw you, I laughed right out loud."

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Carthage Secured a Carriage Factory.

The factory president was in Carthage and the last details were arranged. The factory will be located near the tracks of one of the railroads and will be 60 X 300 feet in size and three stories in height. The bids for its construction are now in and the contract let tomorrow. The building can be completed in 60 days, and the factory will be in operation by Oct. 1. It is one of the best known in the west and has a large trade in this section of MO and also in KS. It is the largest carriage factory west of the Mississippi River, and sells more goods to foreign countries than any similar establishment west of Indiana. They manufacture carriages and light vehicles of all kinds, and have a capacity of 75 4-wheeled vehicles per day. The full working force of men is 300. It will be started with 75 men and will bring 30 families to Carthage. The factory president expects to have the entire running force of men at work before Mar. 1.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

A buddy tells the story of stayin’ with his in-laws. He was impressed at the attention to detail in the “keepin’ the place tidy” category. Said he got up to take a shower, when he returned, the bed was made.

When I was a kid, I hooked up a couple a ropes with clothespins on ‘em, hooked ‘em on the blankets and gave a tug to pull up the blankets. Finally figured out it was easier just to manually pull up the covers.

One a the problems with greenhorns ridin’ a horse is they constantly want to be pullin’ the reins this way or that. Mainly what it does is ta frustrate the horse to the point it starts ignorin’ the rider all together. More experienced riders give a little credit to the horse and let in decide exactly where to step, just makin’ sure it doesn’t wander off the trail.

I’d have ta figure that the bed maker in my buddy’s case, wouldn’t have much fun ridin’ a horse. ‘Sides there’d be all that stoppin’ to clean up the trailin’s.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Procedure to Disclose.

A Council bill that would establish a procedure to disclose potential conflicts of interest and substantial interest for the Mayor, City Council members and the City Administrator will be in first reading at tonight regular Council meeting. The bill is submitted by the Finance Committee.

Under the proposed ordinance, an annual report would be filed with the City Clerk by each individual that would record the names of employers, business ownership, stock holding of more than 10% of a closely held corporation or 2% of a listed stock, and the name and address of each corporation for which the person serves as a director, officer or receiver.

“The proper operation of municipal government,” the bill reads, “requires that public officials and employees be independent, impartial and responsible to the people; that public office not be used for personal gain; and that the public have confidence in the integrity of its government. In recognition of these goals, there is hereby established a procedure for disclosure by certain officials and employees of private financial or other interest in the matters affecting the City.”

The report is to include, for each of the named officials, and “all persons within the first degree of consaguinity or affinity of such person, the date and the identities of the parties to each transaction with a total value in excess of five hundred dollars, if any, that such person had with the political subdivision, other than compensation received as an employee or payment of any tax, fee or penalty due to the political subdivision, and other than transfers for no consideration to the political subdivision; and

“The date and the identities of the parties to each transaction known to the person with a total value in excess of five hundred dollars, if any, that any business entity in which such person had a substantial, had with the political subdivision, other than payment of tax, fee or penalty due to the political utility service to the political subdivision, and other than transfers for no consideration to the political subdivision.”

During discussions at previous meetings, the question of whether the disclosure would apply to not-for-profit corporation. The general consensus was that it would if the individual was on the Board of Directors.

Other clarifications as to the impact of the ordinance will no doubt be attended.

Gospel Weekend at Precious Moments.

The activities during the Precious Moments Gospel Weekend will include additional entertainment in addition to the regular free daily concerts by Al Brumley, Jr. and the Chapelaires.

J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet will appear on Friday August 15 at 7 p.m.

Sumner is the world’s lowest bass singer, according to the Guiness Book of World records. His group, the Stamps Quartet, performed regularly with Elvis Presley during the seventies. Having originally formed in 1924, the quartet also boasts the longest history of any male quartet.

Sumner’s friendship with Elvis goes back as far as the early fifties when Elvis was still attending Humes High School. At that time, Sumner was performing with the Blackwood Brothers Quartet in Memphis. Elvis attended almost every gospel program, hanging out backstage talking to the musicians and singers between performances. One Saturday night, however, Elvis missed the show. When he did attend the next week, Sumner asked Elvis where he had been the week before. When Elvis told Sumner he couldn’t afford to pay the admission price, Sumner made sure Elvis always received a free ticket from that time on. Ticket price $8.

The bluegrass gospel group The New Traditions will perform on Saturday night. Ticket price $5.

Reservations can be made through the Precious Moments reservations office.

Internet Security Issues

Avoid putting credit card numbers online. As you connect from site to site you are sure to run across someone asking you to enter a credit card number online (maybe you're ordering flowers or software). They may even say that they guarantee 100% security. My recommendation to you would be, no matter what they say, don't give them your credit card number. They usually provide an address or phone number (sometimes toll free) that you can use to order their products. The internet is great for advertising but I wouldn't recommend purchasing anything directly from it. I use the Internet as a way of seeing the product before I purchase it then I pick up the phone and call the 1-800 number to order.

Avoid choosing a bad password. If you need a password to get into your email or connect to your internet service provider, you've got another security issue to think about. Most people pick horrible passwords (like their child's or pet's name, street address, maiden name, etc.) that are easy to figure out. When you pick a password, pick one that nobody would possibly guess (maybe a foreign word or something random). The most common mistake everyone makes is putting their password on a sticky note in their cubicle or office. Change your password every once in awhile.

Instructor of Cosmetology

Cosmetology

Cosmetology is the art and science of beauty care. It involves care of the skin, hair, scalp, and nails. This is an art and a science and offers a wide variety of opportunities.

The field of cosmetology has changed drastically in the last five years. It's no longer a looked down on, occupation. It takes 1500 actual clock hours and a practical exam as well as written exam before being licensed. As an instructor, I obtained an additional 1200 clock hours before appearing before the board of examiners for a written and practical exam.

Today, more cosmetologists are practicing a specialized field. We are not just cutting and styling hair. The chemistry of coloring hair takes much understanding and is a favorite of mine. More opportunities are available with product companies than ever before. Because the industry has chosen to educate, more and more educators are needed. The field of skin care is huge and can only expand. Licensing for estheticians was put into force last year in the state of Missouri.

Public schools in the state of Missouri are allowing cosmetology courses to be taught in a students senior year of high school. Therefore producing more need for licensed instructors, statistics showed 1000 instructors in the entire state. The number is starting to grow because of demand.

Opportunity for platform artists is greater now than ever. The field of cosmetology is one of the fastest growing industries in our nation. I'm very proud of the fact that I hold 5 licenses for fields in cosmetology. It's a great industry.

FATHERS AND BIRTH DEFECTS: There is a large body of evidence to show that women who smoke during pregnancy increase the risk of their babies being born with birth defects.

There is also evidence to show that secondhand smoke may cause birth defects. While most of the research centered on the effects of cigarette smoke on women, there was some evidence indicating that fathers who smoke may also contribute to birth defects. The linkage was probably there, but up until now, there was no way to show how the damage can occur.

Purdue University reported on a possible breakthrough in this area. Dr. Stephen B. Hooser of Purdue’s School of Veterinary Medicine is studying how the chemical, Benzo(a)pyrene, a known carcinogen found in cigarette smoke, may cause birth defects by damaging male sperm by binding with its DNA.

This research has broader implications. For example, there are some scientists who believe that conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease may be triggered by cigarette smoke.
