INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

To Secure State G. A. R. Encampment.

A committee representing Stanton Post, G. A. R., and the Carthage Commercial Club will leave tomorrow evening for Warrensburg, Mo., where they go to attend the state G. A. R. encampment. The committee will exert every effort to bring the encampment to Carthage next year.

Numerous prominent G. A. R. men from all parts of the state have promised the Carthage delegation their support. The annual encampment of the G. A. R. of the state is an important gathering and well worth working for. It will bring some hundreds of visitors to Carthage and should result in great benefit to the town.

The following well known Carthage business men will constitute the committee: Major A. F. Lewis, president of the Commerical Club, Mayor George C. Howenstein, Dr. L. I. Matthews, Capt. T. B. Tuttle, Major J. L. Moore, J. W. Miller, Frank Hill and J. E. Land.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

I see that even Mercedes is building one a those little four wheel drive utility vehicles. That musta taken some market research.

I noticed the Lincoln model bein’ advertised, along with other newcomers to the group, just seems odd.

I haven’t seen any studies on why folks are movin’ to the four wheel drive. Most prob’ly never have a real need for such additional hardware. I suppose they get it ‘cause it comes with the package.

My uncle always said he could go anywhere in his rear drive International that a four wheel drive pickup could get out of. He figured more folks got stuck in those rigs cause they figured they could go anywhere. Made ‘em loose their sense.

I have had occasion to be in situations where the extra traction provide by the front drive did come in handy. I do have ta admit that I shouldn’t have been there in the first place. But with that four wheel power, it’s just hard to resist.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

Negotiations Continue for City Administrator Position.

Mayor Riley thinks it will be “a couple of days” before there is a definite response to the offer made to one of the three candidates for the position of City Administrator. Riley had hoped to announce the name of the successful applicant at last night’s City Council meeting.

Riley would not comment on the identity of the candidate or the amount of the proposed salary. A salary range of $45,000 to $60,000 was indicated as necessary by the search committee which narrowed a field of over 60 applicants to the three finalists.

The three candidates were in town last week and were shown about by various department heads and Council members.

The media has been asked to not identify the candidates because they all are currently employed in positions that might be jeopardized if names were made public.

The position opened after the Council asked for Mike Randall’s resignation after seven years on the job.

Ladder Truck Completion Date Approaches.

Fire Chief John Cooper told the Public Safety Committee that the new ladder truck for the Fire Department would be completed on schedule. The final payment of $77,000 is due in October. Two payments of $100,000 each have already been made.

The Committee voted to recommend that the Council borrow the remainder from UMB at one half of prime rate. Currently that would be 4.25%. This arrangement is made possible by utilizing what is called a Tax Anticipation Note for one year. Only government agencies can qualify for this type of loan.

The Fire Department reported responding to 92 calls for assistance during the month of June. Of these, 58 were in the City and 34 were in the outlying fire district.

Medical calls account for the bulk of the responses with a total of 33 for the month. The year to date total for medical calls is 142, up from 102 last year at this time.

Total responses are down for the year due to the small number of grass fires this year. Last year grass fires accounted for 143 year to date responses. This year only 21 such calls have been made.

Calls for residential fires also dropped substantially, down to only 14 total from 42 last year at this time.

The Public Safety Committee meets the third Monday of the month.

Letters to the Editor

Opinions expressed reflect those of the writer and not necessarily those of the Mornin' Mail.

Dear Mornin’ Mail,

I recently was approached by an individual asking if we would have a project in the Parks for himself and a group of volunteers to tackle.

In talking with the gentleman, Mr. Denzil Brown, we learned that he had a group from his church wanting to do a community project. Knowing we had many acres to maintain, he thought they might be able to help somewhere.

On July 19th this group cleaned up an area on the east side of Kellogg Lake. This area will soon be a nice picnic spot.

I recently saw where Carthage might be the best small town to live in. With good citizens such as this group willing to give of their own time to help beautify and improve our community, I know Carthage is the best small town!

I would like to say thank you to Mr. Brown and his group from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Your help is most appreciated.
