INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Loading a Car of Jack.

A car of jack from the Linzee mines is now being loaded at the Frisco depot and will be shipped to Pittsburg, Kansas smelters Wednesday. Another car will probably be shipped Saturday.

This is the first car of ore sold since the big strike was made in the mine and as the stuff shows no signs of giving out shipments will be regular from now on. The South Carthage Company expect to ship a car of jack this week.

Today the South Carthage Co. sold 25 tons of ore to the Lanyon Smelter Co., of Pittsburg for $22 on the ground. The ore sold was what was taken out of the shaft in sinking as drifting has not yet begun.

Rev. I. Entwisle will preach next Sunday at the Blood school house, eight miles north of Carthage.

Mornin',

The task of findin’ a new City Administrator is apparently gettin’ closer to a finish. Although there is no official info bein’ promoted, there is good reason to believe that the field of applicants has narrowed to a handful.

What surprised some was the large number of responses to the small amount of advertisin’ that the City put out. Seems there are a lotta folks who would like to get into the middle of the community workin’s.

Since the hirin’ is a matter that includes some discussion of personal type information, the search committee meetin’s so far have been closed to the public, as will be the interviews of the final candidates. The Council will do the actual hirin’.

I’m guessin’ it’ll be this fall ‘fore we see anyone movin’ into the position, just in time for the early stages of next year’s Mayoral race come April.

The search for entrants in that race seems to be attractin’ a lot of attention also.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

ADA Compliance to be “Reasonable.”

The Public Works Committee voted Tuesday afternoon to recommend to the Council a Council bill stating that the City will take “reasonable” steps to bring the City into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. City Codes inspector Bud Rogers told the Committee that he felt “required” would be his choice of language.

The Committee acted on advice of City Attorney David Dally according to Committee Chairman Bill Fortune.

“It seems as though this could be where we could put ourselves into some legal problems,” said Fortune. “And I think we need to follow the advice of our City Attorney.”

“Well,” said Rogers, “I disagree with him and I disagree with that. For the simple reason that, if you’re not going to accept it as a law, then don’t accept it at all.”

Committee member Bill Johnson moved to accept “reasonable.”

“We pay David for his legal expertise,” said Johnson, “if he thinks it should be one way we should probably accept it.”

CLICK and CLACK TALK CARS

Dear Tom and Ray: I have an early Ford Explorer, 1990 or 1991, I can't remember. I live in Colorado, where you can see purple mountains' majesty...in the color of one's exposed skin on a brisk zero-degree day. I would like to put an engine block heater in my Explorer before next winter, not so much for the engine's benefit, but for my benefit when I sit in it to go to work in the morning when it's minus 15 and I want heat! I've been told there are three different kinds of block heaters; an oil heater, a coolant line heater and a freeze plug heater. Which do you recommend? -- Sidney

Ray: Actually, we recommend the coolant hose-based heaters. The oil heaters are actually "electric dipsticks." You replace your dipstick, which sits in the oil and presumably warms it up. And in our experience, they do make the car easier to start, but they don't get heat on your tootsies any faster.

Tom: The freeze plug replacement heaters work pretty well, and in fact, that's what Ford gives you if you buy one from them. The heating element actually replaces a freeze plug in the engine block and heats the coolant from down there. My biggest concern about freeze plug heaters is that they can leak after installation (we've even seen a few blow out under extreme pressure). And if you don't get under the car and check it regularly, you might not know it was leaking for many moons.

Carthage Over 60 Senior Center

Good morning to all. What a rain we had last night. It woke me up. As I came to work, tree limbs were down all over. We needed the rain but not the winds, although we humans are never satisfied, are we?

We will not be having a breakfast Saturday as we are trying to get items donated towards our breakfast. If we don't get food donated, we will not clear enough to be open or have the elderly work all those hours. Until you see an article in the paper, there will not be another breakfast.

We're preparing for our open house on June 29th from 1 - 4. We really want to show our place off.

Jess Miller was in the hospital over night but back with us today. We hope Mr. Miller sets alright. I don't know what we would do without Wilma's help.

Jasper County Senior Center had their walk to raise money for home bound meals Saturday. The Carthage Senior Center raised $8,143.10. We had a walk-less-walk. Paul Corder walked at the mall. He received prizes for being the oldest walker and the walker who brought in the most money. Money is used for raw foods.

Iona Lewis is still off as her husband is very ill. You know there is so much sickness going around. I hate to see the elderly become ill since so many live alone.

The program was very nice that Mr. Herzog presented last week, "Land of the Free".

This Thursday is birthday week. On Thursday, we will have a birthday dinner. Lester McCall will be 93 that day. He has a wonderful out look on life and is happy God granted him extra years. He still spreads happiness.

Well folks, that's all for today. Praise the Lord with me for granting us with persons who are willing to give to our need. With out God's help, I'd never made it - not even one day.

Isn't it great to tell our Father our need and then stop to pause and praise him for all the gifts he has shared with us.

Till I visit with you again, may God touch each persons life.

Mary Corder

Greeting from sunny California. I just learned about your homepage, when I received the Tuesday, April 22nd issue, from my mother, Catherine Burnett, of 909 Fulton Street, Carthage. I especially liked the picture of the courthouse, as it is my practice to "circle the square" upon my arrival in Carthage, and again when I leave, on each of my visits. Still think it's the best courthouse there is. I will be checking your website frequently, for news of home. Keep up the good work!
