today's laugh

Father Burke, a famous member of a Catholic religious order, was in the witness box many years ago. The cross-examining counsel was tough as he could be, but his efforts broke on the gaiety of the priest. Finally he turned to personal remarks.

"What is that peculiar thing on your head?" he asked, referring to the round, flat skullcap worn by Father Burke.

"That, sir," came the reply, "is the case for the crown."

Talk about an investor, I know a guy who has all of his money tied up in U.S. blondes.

INTERESTING MELANGE.

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Killed a Diamond Rattlesnake.

Yesterday while on a fishing expedition up Spring river near McDaniels' mill Chas. Albaugh, the "well known paper hanger", killed a large diamond rattlesnake. The reptile was about four feet long and a couple of inches thick. Seven rattles and a button decorated his snakeship's tail. The diamond rattlesnakes are said to be a great rarity in this vicinity. The reptile was pounded into a jelly by Mr. Albaugh.

A Pocketbook Lost and Found.

Mrs. G.C. Kellogg lost her pocket book containing $42 in the gutter in front of the First National bank this afternoon. Oran Henning picked it up and left word at the bank and stores near by. A half hour later Mrs. Kellogg recovered her property. She was fortunate to recover it, as not everyone would have been as honest in the matter as was Mr. Henning.

Dunaway Calls for Reopening of

Myers Park Airport.

Council member Art Dunaway told the Council last week that he wants the City and airport supporters to meet and discuss reopening the Myers Park Airport. The facility was closed on December 31, 1996 by Council action.

Dunaway proposes that one runway be reopened so grant funding can be pursued. He said that within a year he felt property could be acquired to relocate the airfield. City Attorney David Dally told the Council that the City’s legal battle to defend it’s right to close the airport is still progressing. He said that three procedural appeals made by the Myers Memorial Airport Committee have been defeated but the original suit filed last fall is still pending in District Court.

“The funds are available,” Dunaway told the Council. “I guarantee you the funds are available [for existing airports]. We’re the only city with a court system [County Seat] that does not have an airport.”

Just Jake Talkin'.

The question has been raised recently of how far the rules of open meetin’ laws reach when it comes to entities which contract with the City. More precisly, the question was if a private organization is contracted to spend tax dollars, should their board meetings be subject to the State open meetin’ regulations.

It appears that the prevailing opinion at this time is that since such organizations do not directly spend the money, they are not subject to the so-called sunshine rules. The reasonin’ is that the City actually pays the bills submitted by the entity, and therefore it can always disallow any expenditures that aren’t considered appropriate. In that sense, the decisions by the entities, and therefore the meetings in which those decisions are made, are considered private matters.

This opinion would in no way change the status of any committee, board, or commission appointed or established by the City to carry out City business.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin’.

The Super Handyman

A nail apron is a handy thing to have. Most have a large pocket across the front. One thing you can do to make your apron more versatile is to add sections to the pocket. Put small plastic containers into the pocket to hold a variety of things without getting them all mixed up. Cut off the tops of the plastic containers so they won't stick up over the pocket. You could really get organized with a nail apron like that.

A SUPER HINT: To keep hand tools with round handles from rolling off your workbench when you set them down, wrap the handles with rubber bands. It will help keep them from rolling and also can give you a better grip.

Dear Kelly: Most of the doorknobs in our home are the old crystal type, and some are even antiques. A lot of them rattle because they are so old and don't fit tight like they used to. It has always bothered me, so I finally did something about it. I put a dab of clear silicon caulk inside the works of each knob and then pushed them back together. The caulk takes up the slack and quiets the knobs from rattling. It works great, and I don't feel like the caulk will ruin the knobs. - M.M.
