today's laugh

"Pa, what are ancestors?"

"Son, your grandfather is an ancestor. So am I."

"No kidding? Then why is everybody always bragging about them?"

They got jammed in the restaurant door and Peadar used some unconstitutional language which annoyed Liam.

"How dare you swear before my wife," he protested. "I’m sorry, said Peadar with contrition, "I didn’t know she wanted to swear first."

Accident On The Electric.

John Dermott of Webb City Run Down By a Car This Morning.

John Dermott, a prominent citizen of Webb City, and also well known here, was the victim of a serious accident while driving across the electric line track at the Bradford switch about 9:30 this morning. The old gentleman is a trifle deaf and this, it is believed, is responsible for the accident.

Motorman McCarty rang his gong and made every effort to stop the car, but it was on a down grade and could not be stopped. The car crashed against the cart in which Mr. Dermott was seated, smashing it to pieces and throwing him out. He was badly cut and bruised and shaken and was taken up unconscious, but fortunately no bones were broken. The cart is a total wreck and the horse was also somewhat hurt. Mr. Dermott was taken to his home on the car which smashed his cart.

  Today's Feature

Power Usage Down In July.

Mild weather during the month of July resulted in lower than expected revenues for CW&EP according to the report given by Chuck Nuse to the Board of Directors last Thursday. Nuse said that residential electric sales were down nearly 10%.

This isolated down swing was not typical of the last year however. For the fiscal year ending July 1, 1997, the utility showed broad strength on all fronts.

Industrial electrical revenue showed an 11% increase from the previous year while during the same period, purchased power increased only 2.5%. Electric operating net income rose by 34% for the year. Unrestricted cash increased by $183,513.

The Board also heard a report from Jerry Simmons on the storm of August 17. Simmons said that approximately three quarters of the community was without power for about an hour. Crews responded to over 200 calls and Simmons spoke highly of the efforts of CW&EP employees.

John Garrett reported that SWPA power costs could raise $81,000 next year due to an increased transmission rate.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

Who'd a thunk it? Ma Bell (or rather one of her offspring) owes me money. Somehow, durin' the switch from this long distance carrier to another, there was a $4.72 extra paid in somewhere to AT&T. For the last few months, I've been gettin' statements showin' that I have a credit. Since I'm not usin' there services (at least not this week) they have no automatic mechanism to settle the account.

Considerin' the cost of producin' the report on the status of my account and the postage, I've gotta figure at least fifty cents a month.

I appreciate the fact that there is such good accountin' goin' on and that I'm gettin' regular updates. I'm sure that this particular situation is not the norm for the company. I'm just not sure it's worth the explainin' it's gonna take to get me out of this situation.

I suppose they at least still get me to read their presentation ever' month. That has ta be worth somethin'.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin'.
